2 labourers Dead, 2 Injured after Compound Wall of Hotel Under Construction Collapses at Karangalpady
Mangaluru: Two labourers died and two others injured after a compound wall of a new hotel under construction collapsed near St Aloysius Higher Primary school, at Karangalpady Junction here on February 28.
The deceased have been identified as Bhimappa aka Bhimesh (25) from Bagalkote and Masood aka Masrigul (20) from West Bengal. Hanikul (23), who suffered injuries, was admitted to Yenepoya Hospital. According to primary reports, while the labourers were working at a private site where hotel construction work was under progress the neighbouring wall collapsed on them. It is learnt that five workers got stuck under the debris, but three survived, while the other two died on the spot.
The fire service personnel from Pandeshwar and Kadri immediately rushed to the spot, and tried all rescue efforts. MLA Vedavyasa Kamath who arrived at the spot has directed the concerned officials to make arrangements for compensation to the family members of the deceased as per the law. Many police officers and other district administration officials also visited the spot.
Sources reveal that as per Employment Compensation Act, both principal employer and contractor have to compensate the dependents. The kith and kin of the deceased can file a case at the JMFC court if they are denied compensation. The compensation is provided to the dependents based on their age.
