Two Udupi Constables Suspended Following Malpe Dalit Woman Attack
Udupi:- Two police constables attached to the Malpe police station have been suspended for dereliction of duty in connection with the recent assault on a Dalit woman in Malpe. The suspension, announced by Udupi District Police Superintendent Dr. Arun K, affects Head Constable Suresh and Police Constable Nagaraj.
The action follows an incident on March 18th in which a woman from Vijayanagar was allegedly attacked and tied to a tree by a group of individuals in Malpe based on accusations of fish theft. The investigation into the incident is currently underway.
Dr. Arun K stated that the suspension was a direct result of a preliminary assessment that indicated negligence on the part of the two officers in responding to the initial reports and ensuring the safety of the victim.
As of Thursday, five individuals have been apprehended in connection with the assault. On Wednesday, Lakshmi, a fish vendor, Shilpa, and Sunder from the Aradhana boat were arrested. Subsequently, Leela and Parvati, identified as the individuals who allegedly tied the woman to the tree, were taken into custody on Thursday.
The State Women’s Commission has issued a strong condemnation of the incident, labelling it inhumane. The Commission has further directed local authorities to ensure stringent legal action against all perpetrators involved. Furthermore, the Commission has demanded a detailed report outlining the actions taken by the police department be submitted at the earliest convenience.
The investigation remains ongoing, and authorities have assured the public that all aspects of the incident are being thoroughly examined to ensure that justice is served.
