UAE: Ramadan in Dubai, an initiative launched by the Dubai Festivals and Retail Establishment (DFRE), an agency of the Department of Tourism and Commerce Marketing (DTCM) to enlighten residents and visitors on the uniqueness of the month of reflection and self-restraint begins its 5th successive edition today (Thursday 18 June) with a citywide campaign inspired by Islamic values, heritage and tradition.
Over the next four weeks, Ramadan in Dubai will offer residents and visitors, local communities and families the opportunity to share a unique cultural experience featuring spiritual, community and family-bonding activities that will add to the charm of a city already renowned for its tourism landmarks, hospitality and welcoming ambience.
During Ramadan in Dubai, residents and visitors can learn more about the month of reflection and self-restraint and also share special moments by participating in the various activities designed to demonstrate Dubai’s multicultural setting and promote cross-cultural understanding.
Enriching this special time for all will be a range of events and activities including Dubai International Holy Quran Award, Dubai Ramadan Forum, Ramadan Tents and the Ramadan Night Market. Dubai’s retail sector will also add value to the Ramadan shopping experience through a number of special offers, deals and discounts while malls in Dubai will create memorable moments for families through cultural events that that will further enhance the Ramadan ambience.
Ramadan in Dubai is a part of this year’s Dubai Summer Calendar, which comprises an array of special events, festivities and celebration organised by DFRE to help position the city as a summer destination of choice. In addition to Ramadan in Dubai, the packed season will also feature Eid in Dubai – Eid Al Fitr (18 July – 22 July), Modhesh World (9 July –29 August), Dubai Summer Surprises (23 July – 5 September) and Eid in Dubai – Eid Al Adha (24 September– 2 October).

The “Dubai Ramadan Forum” is organized under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Ahmed bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Chairman of Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Foundation. It is one of the many events hosted as part of the annual “Ramadan in Dubai” campaign. The 14th edition of the Forum features a line-up of events including daily multilingual lectures by well-known preachers, a unique exhibition showcasing the History and Art of Arabic Calligraphy, the Preacher of the Nation contest for talented youth, a training course titled “Building Bridges of Communication with Teenagers”, the Convoy of Goodness campaign which will witness distribution of free multimedia and books and the schedule of the daily lectures, a Ramadan health campaign, mass group Iftars and a Be A Preacher Zone.

Founded in 1997 under the directive of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, the Dubai International Holy Quran Award is an annual award which features the international Quran competition for memorisation of the Quran by participants from across the Muslim world as its main component and will also feature a series of lectures highlighting Islamic values.

Opening in the final stages of Ramadan in Dubai, the 16th edition of Modhesh World will be the biggest in its history, brought to life through the theme “Every Step is a New Adventure”. This year’s Modhesh World will be the biggest in its history, occupying over 34,000 square metres at the well-connected and centrally located Dubai World Trade Center (DWTC). Eight halls, each with its own identity and themed adventures, will feature many new world-class attractions including The Slide, an attraction for children and adults, and the mystifying Mirror Maze. Visitors will be able to scale the heights of fun on high-energy attractions such as Fly Jump and Valkyrie, an interactive simulator that will pit players in a thrilling competition.

The Middle East’s largest indoor sporting venue will celebrate its landmark fifth outing with an action-packed 10-week schedule of sports, tournaments, academies and activities that is designed for both serious athletes and sporting novices of all ages. The multi-purpose Dubai Sports World 2015 – organised in partnership with Dubai Sports Council – will feature four pro-standard pitches for five-a-side football, four pro-standard pitches for seven-a-side football and rugby, four basketball courts, two tennis courts, six badminton courts, a mini cricket pitch nets, a regulation-sized volleyball court, an expansive skate-boarding and BMX park, a state-of-the-art gym by TechnoGym, a dedicated fitness studio for group classes and a cycling studio.

The Ramadan Night Market is a 10-day shopping event hosted at Dubai World Trade Centre, offerings shoppers the opportunity to purchase a wide variety of branded merchandise from over 360 retailers from around the region, including clothing, jewellery & accessories, health & beauty products, personal care items, perfumes, food, home appliances, electronics, toys & baby Items, and much more. Other attractions include the Food Pavilion, a Grand Arabic-themed Majlis, Henna Majlis and a massive Kids Area, offering a range of activities including face painting, nail art, arts & crafts area, and soft play area.

Al Farooq Omar Bin Al Khatab Mosque will host a selected group of the best Quran reciters from the Islamic world during the holy month of Ramadan, including Dr. Fares Mustafa, Sheikh Mohamad Mubarak Abdulla, Sheikh Abdelwili Amer AlArkani, Dr. Ahmed Al Sayed Dwedar and Dr. Fares Mustafa.

Al Warqa Mosque & Omar Bin Abdulaziz Mosque in Jebel Ali

An activity organised by the Islamic Affairs and Charitable Activities (IACA) Department, UAE Reciters is aimed at encouraging Quran reciters among the local community to showcase their talent by eloquently reciting the Holy Quran. There will be two groups of the best reciters from the UAE and from the Department itself participating in this activity after Isha prayers daily during the month of Ramadan. The UAE group will be in Al Warqa mosque and the group from the IACA will be at the Omar Bin Abdulaziz Mosque in Jebel Ali.

This activity will feature renowned reciters of the Holy Quran leading the congregation at Isha and Taraweeh and Qiyam ul Layl prayers.
Nad Al Sheba Sports Tournament

A much-awaited sports event that takes place annually during Ramadan, the Nad Al Sheba sports tournament is proving that it is achieving all aspects of the sporting equation by providing training of the mind and body together year after year. The tournament includes the following competitions: Paddle Tennis, Wheelchair, Archery, 10km Running, 70km Cycling, Futsal and Volleyball. Ramadan Leagues run from 18th June to 18th July
Dubai’s newest Sportsplex opens its doors in Ramadan offering patrons to participate in indoor sports in its efforts to promote community and physical well-being amongst adults and youth alike. A variety of sports can be played, from Futsal, Basketball, Volleyball, Badminton and Handball. This Ramadan, the Futsal and Basketball leagues matches will be held from Sundays to Thursdays from 8 p.m. onwards.
Events at Dubai malls
As part of ‘Ramadan in Dubai, malls will also be organising family-oriented and charity activities during this period. The Ramadan programme at Mercato includes an Abaya Exhibition, Islamic Art Display, a Charity Henna Tent activity, a Children’s Workshop, A Charity Book Sale, and Donation Box for UAE activity. Wafi Mall will organise the Layal Exhibition, a fashion bazaar and exhibition, which is purely a charity driven event with proceeds going to the Emirates Down Syndrome Association. Dubai Festival City Mall will run a special month-long campaign with a variety of activities for both children and adults, including cultural games, storytelling, calligraphy, henna, internet booths and free health check-ups done by officials from the Ministry of Health.

Several leading hotels and public places will be hosting Ramadan Tents for Iftar, as well as for having meals during Suhour including Asateer (Atlantis The Palm), “Downtown” The Ramadan Tent with a View in Downtown Dubai – Mohammed Bin Rashid Boulevard, and The Majlis at Dubai World Trade Centre.
Summer Promotions
Participating malls and retails outlets
Shoppers will have the opportunity to participate in the various promotions that will be run right across the summer at participating malls in collaboration with the Dubai Shopping Malls Group. The summer promotions began on May 24 with the second leg of the campaign set to begin on 1 July and run until the last day of the “Eid in Dubai – Eid Al Fitr” celebrations. Residents and visitors can also continue to avail themselves of attractive bargains and deals including discounts of up to 75 % that are being offered at malls and retail outlets in Dubai.
