Speaking to media persons, District Superintendent of Police Annamalai K said that Bannanje Raja was produced before the special court at Belagavi under Karnataka Control of Organized Crimes Act 2000. The court remanded him to judicial custody till September 11. The judge had ordered that Raja be placed in the central prison at Hindalga.

The Udupi police had sought for further probe into a firing case at the city based Airody Jewelers and a body warrant was issued from the Udupi court. The CPI of Udupi, Shikanth produced the body warrant to the Superintendent of Prison at Belagavi and likewise, Raja was presented in the Udupi court to seek his custody. The Chief Judicial Magistrate has remanded him to police custody for 9 days.

Three more cases are pending against him in Udupi. Two of these cases are linked to incidents that took place in Manipal and Malpe during 1991 and 1992 respectively, when Bannaje Raja was residing in Udupi. Another case of eviction of a woman staying in a rented house during 1996 is also under the scanner. A “C” report was filed in a case linked in Bramhavar and if constructive evidence have been gathered during the investigation process then the police will reopen the case. Investigation Officers will decide whether to seek body warrants for further cases.

The four cases will be investigated, including the R N Nayak case of Ankola, in Udupi. Only the four cases will be investigated because of the extradition agreement between the Indian and Moroccan governments.

“The R N Nayak case of Ankola was an organized crime and the police need time to probe further into the case. We are cross checking the links and possibilities in the case,” he added.
