Udupi: CBE and CESU celebrate Teachers Day, Sorake lauds service of Catholic educational Institutions

Udupi: Catholic educational institutions have played a prominent role in imparting quality based disciplined education to the students thus influencing them to become ideal citizens of the country, said Vinay Kumar Sorake, Minister for Urban Development and Minister in-charge of the district.

He was speaking at the Teachers’ Day programme organized to felicitate teachers of Catholic educational institutions. The programme was organized by the Catholic Board of Education, Mangaluru jointly with Catholic Education Society at St Mary’s School, Kannarpadi and Udupi here on September 4.

“A teacher has special respect in the society. The selfless service of teachers in educating young minds of Udupi district has made us proud. The first place in SSLC examination, second place in PUC and CET examinations at state level are a testimony of the quality teaching in our schools. The 8th rank in Civil Service examination is a feather to our cap. A recent survey indicates that Udupi district is leading in imparting quality education. The government has initiated efficient measures to improve the education system,” he said.

Bishop Dr Gerald Isaac Lobo in his presidential message said that teachers should love their students along with their profession and the institution, only then can they succeed.” Teaching is a divine profession and the teacher should work towards building future citizens,” he added.

The Diocese level Best Teacher award for 2014-15 was presented to Irene Rodrigues, Headmistress of Don Bosco English Medium School Shirva, on the occasion. Retired teachers were felicitated by the Bishop and students who secured highest marks in SSLC, PUC and graduation were also honoured by the chief guest.

On behalf of the retired teachers, L J Fernandes (HM St Mary’s High School Kundapur), Lona Coelho (St Lawrence Higher Primary School Attur Karkala) and Prof N M Hegde (Milagres College Kallianpur) shared their opinions.

Udupi MLA Pramod Madhwaraj, DDPI Divakar Shetty, St Mary’s School Kannarpadi correspondent Fr Fred Mascarenhas, Diocese Vicar General Msgr Baptist Menezes were present.

The programme began with a prayer song by the students of Milagres English medium School Kallianpur. Students of St Mary’s School Kannarpadi performed the welcome dance. Fr Gerald D’Souza, secretary of Catholic Board of Education Mangaluru, welcomed the gathering. Fr Lawrence C D’Souza, Secretary of Catholic Education Society Udupi Diocese, delivered the vote of thanks. Amritha and Vinay compered the programme.
