Udupi: Chief Minister to inaugurate Varahi Irrigation Project work on April 20

Udupi: A project which saw major decline for 35 after the vested political interests and other issues, Varahi water irrigation will be inaugurated by CM Siddaramaiah on April 20. The Varahi water irrigation project will cover 49kms of water flow for agricultural land through canals.

The project witnessed speedy progress under Vinay Kumar Sorake, Minister for Urban Development and Minister in-charge District and M B Patil, Minister for Water Resources.

He shared his happiness over the completion of 60% work in two years in the press meet held at Congress Bhavan Udupi on April 13. He also said that the completion of the project is the prime goal and 40% of remaining construction work will be completed after land acquisition and clearance from the Forest Department.

The dignitaries M B Patil, Minister for Water Resources, Revenue Minister Srinivas Prasad, Forest Minister Ramanath Rai, MP Rajyasabha Oscar Fernandes, MP Shobha Karandlaje, Former CM and MP B S Yedurappa, MLC’S Kota Srinivas Poojary, Captian Ganesh Karnik, Halady Srinivas Shetty and elected representatives will be present during the inaugural programme. CM Siddaramaiah will be distributing 0% interest loans to fisher woman and other facilities during the programme which will be held at Shankernarayana.

The foundation stone for Post Graduate centre and Science Research Centre at Belapu covering 30 acres. A proposal of rupees 123 crores has been sent to the Central Government, while the State Government has granted administrative approval for 15 crores to commence the construction work.

Expert advice will be taken for the revival of Bramhavar Sugar factory. The Varahi irrigation project was started to meet the needs of cultivating sugar cane required for the Bramhavar sugar factory, he added.

A meeting has been held with the officials regarding the environmental hazards linked with UPCL. A multi-water project covering 10 villages costing 58 crores will be launched to facilitate the drinking water needs of the villages affected by UPCIL. A meeting will be held with the Energy Minister D K Shivkumar and Company Officials on the same, he said.

Udupi MLA Pramod Madhwaraj, Byndoor MLA Gopal Poojary, Janardhan Thonse, Bujanga Shetty, MA Gafoor, Shivaram Shetty, Divakar Kunder, Kishan Hegde Kolkaibail, Prakash Kodavoor, Harish Kini, B. Narishma Murthy, Abdul Aziz, Devaki Sannayya and others were present.
