According to the relatives, the victim Varsha (22), wife of Devadas Bangera, was admitted to Adarsh Hospital, Udupi on Saturday, April 18. Dr Chayalatha, the Gynaecologist of the hospital, conducted a Cesarean section on the woman immediately after admission, without conducting preliminary tests or treating her for any possible complications. After the cesarean operation, Varsha began bleeding profusely and the doctors asked the family members to shift Varsha immediately to the KMC Hospital Manipal. Varsha did not respond to the treatment at Manipal Hospital and died in the morning of Friday, April 24.

The relatives and villagers of the deceased began a dharna and placed the body in front of the hospital. They demanded for action against the doctor. Annamalai, SP of Udupi district, visited the hospital and appealed to the protesters to withdraw the protest. Heeding to his request, they withdrew their dharna. SP assured them that steps would be taken after getting the post-mortem report.

The family members of the victim have lodged a complaint against the doctor, which has been registered in the Town Police Station.

In his official press statement Dr G S Chandrasheakar,  Medical Director Adarsha Hospital said that  Our Super Specialty hospital running successfully from last 10 years. The patient Varsha was admitted on april 17 and delivered on Apri 18. After delivery the treating Doctor noticed tendency for increased bleeding immediately. This tendency is a known dangerous, unavoidable and rare complication of deliveries, so patient was immediately shifted to KMC, Manipal considering she would need treatment in higher centre.

The patient was shifted on April 18  and died on April 24 at KMC, Manipal. It is very unfortunate that this incident occurred and our heartfelt sympathies to the bereaved family.  We wish to emphatically state that there was no negligence on the part of treating Doctor or our hospital at any stage.
