Udupi Diocese holds world labourers Day

Udupi: The government should effectively address the issues of labourers while formulating labour policies said MLC Ivan D’Souza. He was speaking at the world Labour Day programme organized by Udupi Diocese Labour Commission and District Labour Department at Mother of Sorrows Church Auditorium here on May 1.

93 percent unorganized labourers are deprived of all facilities, 7% of organized labourers are receiving facilities. The facilities extended by the government are not reaching deserving labourers. The lives of unorganized labourers are affected.

The State government has formulated an effective policy for labourers. Labourers have to enrol paying rupees 25 for an identity card. The accidental benefit is Rs 2 lakh for labourers.

The beedi industry is on the verge of closure and is feared to ruin the lives of 4 lakh beedi workers. The government should take effective measures in this regard, The garment industry should be introduced in undivided Udupi-Dakshina Kannada to protect the interest of beedi workers. A memorandum has been submitted to the Labour Minister in this regard.

The central government is following an anti-labour policy which is forcing beedi workers to protest, he added.

Bishop Dr Gerald Isaac Lobo presided over the programme, Vicar General Msgr Baptist Menezes delivered the keynote address. District Labor Inspector Jeevan Kumar K H and S S Rammurthy gave information on the various facilities available for laborers.

Fr Herald Pereira, Fr Clement Mascarenhas, William Machado, Valerian Fernandes, Magdalin Mathias, Ronald Menezes, Joseph Fernandes and others were present.

Diocese Labour Commission Director Kiran Elroy Crasta welcomed the gathering, Joseph Rebello compered the programme.
