Udupi: The district administration and the Backward Community and Minority Welfare (BCMW) department of the district celebrated Hazrat Tipu Sultan’s birth anniversary at the Narayanaguru Auditorium Bannaje here, on November 10.
The programme began with the Nadageethe. Harish L Gaonkar, district officer of BCMW department, welcomed the gathering.
District minister in-charge Vinay Kumar Sorake inaugurated the programme by lighting the lamp. In his message, Vinay Kumar Sorake said that Tipu Sultan was a true ruler and patriot, who was ideal for people of all castes and communities, and according to some historians, he was instrumental in developing a missile. Tipu has done great service to this country and he was a secular ruler. He protected many temples from being looted. The famous Shankara Math at Sringeri was once looted and the pontiff ran away out of fear. But it was Tipu who brought him back and gave protection to the temple. He proved his love for Hindus by building and maintaining temples in Srirangapatna. But unfortunately, some people are misleading the common people by twisting history, he said.
A K Kakkila, Editor of Sanmarga Magazine, delivered a special lecture on Tipu Sultan’s life and achievements. City Municipal Council president Yuvraj presided over the function. Deputy commissioner Dr R Vishal, Superintendent of Police Annamalai, Chairman of UUDA Janardhan Tonse and others were present.
Meanwhile, some right wing associations, the opposition BJP and the United Christian Association have opposed the government’s decision of celebrating Tipu’s birth anniversary, calling him a “controversial person”. To avoid any untoward incidents, the police department made special security arrangements at the programme premises.
Tippu was, is and will always be a controversial figure based on several facts documented by several historians across the board on the tons of atrocities to Hindus & Christians. Hence Hindus and Christians are protesting right now.
If Indians in general and Muslims in particular would like to celebrate the life of a great Indian Muslim and a highly respected figure, then I believe the unanimous choice would be our beloved ex President APJ Abdul Kalam and an overwhelming majority of people will agree a Abdul Kalam Jayanti
I wonder what Mr. Shaikh has to say to this:
