Udupi: The District Administration, Zilla Panchayat, Backward Class and Minority Department jointly organised the 100th birth anniversary of former Chief Minister D Devraj Urs here at Lions Bhavan Brahmagiri on Thursday August 20.
The programme began with an invocation by the students, Harish L Gaounker district officer for Backward Class and Minorities Department welcomed the gathering.
Vinay Kumar Sorake district minister in-charge and urban development minister inaugurated the programme by lighting the lamp and paid floral tributes to D Devraj Urs portrait.
In his inaugural message Vinay Kumar Sorake said that the Former chief minister D Devaraj Urs has brought in silent revolution in the state by handing over powers to the lower strata of the society. By taking rich persons into confidence, he implemented land reforms act effectively. He was responsible for abolition of bonded labour system. Youth should follow the principles of Urs, he said.
Dayananda D of Government women’s first grade college Ajjarkadu delivered special talk on the life and achievements of Devaraj Urs. Meritorious students were felicitated on the occasion.
Pramod Madhwaraj MLA Udupi presided over the function. Savitha Kotian ZP president, Sunitha Naik TP president, Ganesh vice president TP, Dr R Vishal Deputy commissioner, Kanagavalli CEO ZP were present on the occasion.
