Udupi District BJP to Protest against Celebration of Tipu Jayanti on November 9
Udupi: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has decided to register their opposition to the proposed celebration of Tipu Jayanti on November 10. A state-wide protest will be held on November 9, on the eve of Tipu Jayanti, to protest against the decision of the state government in continuing with the celebrations started by the earlier Siddaramaiah-led Congress government since 2015, despite resistance from various sections of the society. In Udupi, the district BJP will hold a protest on November 9 at 4:00 pm near the BJP office.
Speaking at a press meet at the District BJP office in Kadiayali, Udupi, district BJP president Mattar Rathnakar Hegde said that, Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy, who had stayed neutral during the Tipu Jayanti over the past three years, was expected to stick to his stand. But, he has endorsed the ideology of the Congress, especially that of former CM Siddaramaiah, to save his position, he said.
Large-scale communal violence erupted during the Tipu Jayanti celebrations in 2015 when it was first organised by the state government. The Kumaraswamy-led state government is all set to celebrate Tipu Jayanti despite widespread protests and violence that had marred celebrations during the last two years.
What is the need for celebrating the birth anniversary of Tipu Sultan? He was responsible for destroying places of worship of Christians and Hindus. Tipu destroyed some 8,000 temples. He murdered Hindus and Christians. Tipu Sultan was responsible was for the destruction of many churches in the Coastal region during his rule. He had also committed atrocities on Christians. Tipu Sultan was ‘anti-Kannada and anti-Hindu’ and the state government should not celebrate this day, which is on November 10, he said.
BJP leaders Yashpal Suvarna, Suresh Nayak, Shiva Kumar and others were present.
