Udupi: District Holds World Mental Health Day in Dr A V Baliga Hospital

Udupi: The social stigma attached to mental illness should be put to an end, said Shivshanker Amrannavar, Principal District and Sessions Judge. He was speaking during the inauguration of the World Mental Health Day organized by the District Legal Services Authority, District Hospital jointly with Dr. A V Baliga Memorial Hospital, Doddangudde here, on October 10.

Mental illness can be cured with consultations and medicines. People should be fearless while approaching medical experts on mental illness. Love and affection is a part of the treatment of person having mental illness. Awareness on mental illness will help the patient live in dignity, he added.

Dr. P V Bhandary, Medical Director of Dr. A V Baliga Medical Hospital, said that the Mental Health Act of 1987 has framed rules for protecting the rights of people suffering from mental illness. “Many people request treatment of persons having mental illness who roam in roads. Such persons having mental illness have to be first identified by the police and then produced to the Chief Judicial Magistrate, who then orders for the evaluation by a psychiatrist. The relatives have to play a prominent role in getting the best medical care to the person having mental illness in their family because it is their responsibility.” He gave a call to nurses to take care of persons having mental illness with great care and affection.

Dr. Vasudev S, Psychiatrist at District Government Hospital Udupi said that human rights violation of persons suffering from mental health is at a peak. The dignity of persons suffering from mental health issues should be restored. The social stigma leads a person suffering from mental illness to lose dignity, he added.

Soujanaya Karunakar Shetty, Administrator of Dr. A V Baliga Memorial Hospital, welcomed the gathering. Dr. Sunil Kumar proposed vote of thanks. Akshata and Jyothi compered the programme.
