Udupi: The district administration on October 2 remembered Mahatma Gandhi on his 146th birth anniversary by paying floral tributes at his memorial in Bhujanga Park, Ajjarkadu here on October 2.
District minister in-charge Vinay Kumar Sorake, Udupi MLA Pramod Madhwaraj, Deputy Commissioner Dr R Vishal, Additional DC Channabasappa, CMC Councillors Yaspal Suvarna and Janardhan Bhandarkar garlanded the statue of Mahatma Gandhi.
An all-religion prayer was conducted during the ceremony. The favourite hymns of Gandhi were also played on the occasion.
In his message, Vinay Kumar Sorake said that Gandhi’s thoughts and belief remain a great inspiration for us. “Let us dedicate ourselves to building the India of Gandhiji’s dreams. Even years after his death, the teachings of Mahatma Gandhi have great importance,” he added.
Pramod Madhwaraj MLA of Udupi in his presidential message said that Mahatma Gandhi had inspired the people and secured freedom for the country through his methods of truth, non-violence and “satyagraha”. Everyone should give importance to adopt Gandhiji’s principals in their lives, he said.
Various government schemes under the ITDP department were handed over to the beneficiaries by Vinay Kumar Sorake during the programme.
Later, Minister Sorake launched Swachh Bharat Abhiyan programme by cleaning the Bhujanga Park area.
