Udupi District Police begin to Crack Down on Drunk Driving – SP Laxman Nimbaragi

Udupi: As the party season begins, the Udupi district police have started to crack down on drunk drivers said Laxman B Nimbaragi Superintendent of Police of Udupi District.
He was speaking to media persons after attending the weekly Phone-in-programme at the district police office Udupi on Friday, October 26.
The police have set up check posts in the Udupi city limits in Udupi, Indrali, Manipal, Perampalli and Santhekatte and deployed police officials to watch out for those especially driving consuming alcohol during the night time. We have started the campaign to promote safe driving, he said.
The sale of Liquor illegally in petty shops dominated the SP’s phone-in programme. A total of 25 calls were received during the hour-long phone-in programme.
Callers from Karkala Kallu-Kuntadi, Adi-Udupi, Mandarthi and Byndoor complained that liquor was being illegally sold in petty shops and houses. The SP said that action would be taken against such shops and houses.
Callers from Haladi and Brahmavar complained that Matka is played at the Haladi and Brhamavar Auto stand. The SP replied that action would be taken by the end of the day.
When a caller said that many vehicles are being parked on both sides of the Kaup-Shirva road which is a hurdle to the pedestrians. Superintendent of Police, Laxman Nimbargi, said parking of vehicles would not be allowed on the road and instructed the concerned police station to take action.
A student of Kaup government school complained that a KSRTC bus which was plying through the school route has stopped since many days. Superintendent of Police, Laxman Nimbargi, said that the matter regarding bus permits would be taken up with the concerned authorities.
After the previous phone-in programme, 7 Matka cases were registered and 7 persons arrested. 6 gambling cases were registered and 31 arrested. One person was arrested in an illegal liquor sale case. 4 persons were arrested in the NDPS case. 135 cases were registered under COTPA, 19 for drunk driving, 207 for shrill horns, 95 cases for using mobiles while riding/driving, 2741 cases for riding without helmets, 102 cases for over speed and 5066 cases for other crimes under the Motor Vehicles Act.
