Udupi: Govt Committed to Making State Hunger-free – Vinay Kumar Sorake

Udupi: Over 5.5 lakh BPL families will benefit under the revised Anna Bhagya scheme in Udupi district, said Vinay Kumar Sorake, the district Minister In-charge and Urban Development Minister.
He was addressing the gathering after launching the district level revised Anna Bhagya scheme at Kaup JCI Bhavan here, on May 1. “The Congress government is committed to making Karnataka a hunger-free state. When Siddaramaiah took charge as the Chief Minister of Karnataka, he had announced the Anna Bhagya scheme in which the poor are supplied rice at Rs. 1 per kg.” The minister highlighting the important pro-people schemes, said that Rs 1600 crore in loans for Ashraya houses was waived. “An interest-free loan will be disbursed to poor people this fiscal year. To ensure that the poor avail such loans and the Yashaswini scheme, BPL card-holders will be made members of co-operative societies,” he said.

“In the revised Anna Bhagya scheme, a member of each BPL family will get 4 kg of rice and 1 kg of wheat per month for free. Hitherto, a certain quantity of food grains was distributed to all BPL households, irrespective of the number of members in the family. From now on, the Department of Food and Public Distribution will calculate the quantity of food grains to be distributed to each BPL family based on the number of members in it. Besides rice and wheat, beneficiaries will be given 1 kg of palm oil and 1 kg of iodized salt at a subsidized rate. While palm oil will be priced at Rs. 25 per litre, a kg of salt will cost Rs. 2.”
Pradeep, President of Uliyaragoli Grama Panchayath, presided over the function. Kaup GP President Usha Shenoy, Vice president Dinesh Kotian, ZP member Ida Gibba D’Souza, Kaup Divakar Shetty, Naveenchandra Shetty, Madhva Billava and others were present.
