Udupi: Members of the district Association of Guest Lecturers of First Grade Colleges protested at the Clock Tower near Service bus-stand on February 10, demanding the payment of their salaries and resolving of other issues.
Lecturers boycotted classes and shouted slogans against the State government.
Addressing the gathering Ranjith Kumar Shetty said that, there are 14,500 guest lecturers teaching in 411 government first grade colleges across the State who have not been paid their salaries for months. These lecturers have been hired on contract basis and their jobs have not been made permanent so far. Our salary dues have not yet been cleared and we have no job security. It has become difficult for the lecturers to lead their lives The government has not considered our service seriously even though we work more than the permanent lecturers, he added.
The agitators put forth other demands such as increase in monthly salary to Rs 25,000, formation of a committee of experts for resolving legal obstacles while their service is being made permanent.
The Karnataka Rakshana Vedike Udupi district extended their support to the lecturers. Anil Kumar, Santhosh Shetty, Ramesh Shetty and others were present.
