Udupi: Syed Noorullah of Koppalangadi in Kaup in the district was employed in Dubai for some years.
In 2011, after arriving in Mumbai by air, he took a bus to Mangaluru. The Mangala Travels bus had reached Honnavar in Uttar Kannada district around 5-30 am on May 20, 2011. It had halted near the Sharavati circle there to allow passengers intending to alight in that town.
Syed Noorullah got down to ensure that the correct luggage was being unloaded as often the bags tend to get mixed up. As he stood behind the bus with other three passengers who had Honnavar as their destination, a truck speeding from Karwar towards Mangaluru had mowed them down. It also hit the bus from behind.
Noorullah’s family had filed a claim in the motor vehicle tribunal in Udupi. After prolonged proceedings, senior civil judge K A Nagajyoti of the senior civil court had awarded a compensation of Rs 40.35 lakh to the victim’s family.
The judge took into account Noorullah’s salary in Dubai and the future of the dependents like his parents, wife and children while evaluating the amount, which is liable to be paid by the truck-owner and the insurance firm, Bajaj Allianz.
The court also ruled that interest at the rate of 8% be paid on the amount with effect from August 27, 2011 until the date of full settlement.
