Udupi: The JCTU, held a jail bharo campaign against the ordinance on Land Acquisition and Foreign Direct Investment in insurance sector in front of the Post office, here on February 26.
K V Bhat of AITUC, Udupi said that the central government is ruining the purpose of socio economic development by favoring the ordinances which are in favor of the corporate establishments. The Jansangh had earlier mocked the ordinances passed by the late PM Indira Gandhi and now they are following the same path of dictatorship.
The Land Acquisition Act passed by the UPA government had stressed the need of the opinion of people on the acquisition of land for various purposes. The government had to return the land acquired to the beneficiaries after 5 years if the purpose of acquisition was not fulfilled. The clauses mentioned earlier have been removed in the ordinance which is condemnable. The efforts made by the central government to promote development is in vain. There is a drastic decrease in oil prices in the international market but there is no reduction in petrol and diesel prices.
The central government should change its stand on the ordinance and support the farmers. The ordinance will destroy the farmers life, he added.
The police later detained the protesters who were holding dharna in front of the post office.
Balakrishna Shetty, Secretary CITU, Balgangadhar Rao, Bharatiya Mazdur Sangh; U Gurudath, General Secretary, Life Insurance Employees Association, Sashidhar Golla, Ravindra A and others were present.
