Udupi: The Karnataka Tulu Sahitya Academy Mangaluru, Tulu Koota Udupi, Oriental Archives Research Center Udupi, Tulu Association MGM College Udupi and NSS Unit, and Tulu Sangha of Govt PU College jointly organised “Tuluminadana-2015” (Tulu Cultural Fest) at MGM College campus here, on September 13.
The programme began with an invocation; Jayakar Shetty, president of Tulu Koota Udupi, welcomed the gathering.
Vinay Kumar Sorake, district minister in-charge and state urban development minister, inaugurated the programme by lighting the lamp.
In his inaugural message, he said that Tulu is one of the ancient languages that possesses supreme cultural tradition. Tulu, which is one among the Panchadravida languages, is the mother tongue of a limited population. It is expanding, with increased usage in various parts of the globe. Culture and traditions of Tulu Nadu were influenced by agriculture practise of the land. Our culture, tradition and folkore were closely connected to each other. Traditional Tulu Nadu games helped in communicating the culture of the region.
‘Chennamane,’ a traditional game played during the month of ‘Aati’ also helped to explain the culture of farmers of Tulu Nadu. Pad dana provides indepth information on traditional games of the region. Traditional games were not only meant for entertainment. It also helped in enriching knowledge and instilling values in the lives of an individual. The games also helped in the personality development of an individual, he added.
He further said that Tulu language can be preserved with love towards it. The language which has feelings in it, will grow strong.
A colourful dance performance, reflecting the culture of Tulunadu was performed on the occasion. To encourage the traditional tribal game “Channemane”, a competition was conducted for the public on the occasion. As part of the Tulu festival, students took part in Tulu ethnic rhymes, proverbs and riddles. As part of the commemoration, all participants were given plants and made to take an oath to inspire others to grow more plants and trees in the name of “Tulu Pachevana” (Tuluvas Green Garden).
Karnataka Tulu Sahithya Acadamy president Janaki Brahmavar presided over the function.
