Udupi: The 66th Republic Day celebrations marked the patriotic spirit with pomp at the MGM Ground Indrali, here on Monday January 26.
State Minister of Urban Development and District minister in-charge, Vinay Kumar Sorake, hoisted the national Flag. He then received a guard of honour from the district police force, NCC, Scouts and the Guides.
In his address Vinay Kumar Sorake briefing over various development works taken up by the government in the district, said that the people friendly administration by state government has aided many number of development programmes to ensure all round development. As many as Rs. 85 crore has been provided for improvement of underground drainage and water supply in the three towns of Udupi district under the Karnataka Integrated Urban Water Management Programme. Of the Rs 85 crore, Rs 54 crore would be spent on improving the underground drainage system in Kundapur town municipality. The government has sanctioned a mini Vidhan Soudha in Udupi and its construction would begin soon. The construction of the mini Vidhan Soudha in Kundapur is in its final stages and will be inaugurated shortly.
A proposal of Rs 122.59 crore for the construction of Hejmady Kodi Fisheries Harbour has been sent to the Union government. The district has received as many as Rs 21.38 crore under rural water supply programme, the minister said administrative approval from the government for 2621 action plans is sought under the programme. He said under the Nirmal Bharat Abhiyan, as many as 8713 toilets have been constructed at a cost of Rs 5.25 crore. Under the second phase of Nagarotthana scheme, Rs 45 crore is released to take up development programmes in Karkala, Udupi and Saligarama. A sum of Rs 15.59 crore is allotted for the maintenance of rural stretches and Rs 16.00 crore is allotted for the development of villages in the district selected under Suvarna Gramodaya Yojane. As a part of the World Bank-aided National Cyclone Risk Mitigation Project, 2 cyclone shelters, 3 connecting bridges and 29 roads will be taken up in the district at a cost of Rs 40 crore he added.

The cultural programmes with the essence of devoted nationalistic fervor marked the finale of the republic day celebrations.
