Udupi: The Department of Kannada and Culture, Tourism department Udupi andMalpe beach development committee jointly organised ‘Suggi-Huggi’, a variety cultural programme by folk artistes and the distribution of taxis to 10 unemployed youth belonging to SC/ST and minority at the Malpe Beach here on February 27.
The programme began with an invocation, Nagaraj director of Tourism department welcomed the gathering. Pramod Madhwaraj MLA of Udupi and also state parliamentary secretary for revenue department inaugurated “Suggi – Huggi” and later distributed Taxis to Unemployed youth.
Speaking on the occasion Pramod Madhwaraj said that Udupi district is having great potential for Tourism. The Malpe beach attracts a lot of tourists from across the country. The Malpe Beach Development Committee has made all arrangements for the safety of the tourists. Rs 80 lakh had been spent for providing various facilities for the tourists including maintaining cleanliness. A machine to clean the beach would be purchased at a cost of Rs 70 lakh. Rs 6crore would be spent on construction and development of roads to improve connectivity to the beach. The provision of the free Wi-fi facility would be one more attraction for the tourists to visit the beach. We have appealed to the union government to provide round-the-clock Wi-Fi facility for tourists on the beach. Rs 2crore has been allocated for the construction of a separate jetty at the St Mary’s Island which would help the tourists, he added.
