Udupi: The Udupi Women’s Congress celebrated ‘International Women’s Day’ at the District Congress Bhavan Ajjarkad Udupi, here on Saturday, March 28. Veronica Cornelio, President of Udupi District Women Congress, welcomed the gathering. The programme was inaugurated by five women representatives along with other dignitaries on the dais.

After the inauguration a special talk on women’s participation in politics was organised. Venkatesh Moorthy of Namma Bhoomi was the resource person of the programme.

On behalf of the Mahila Congress, Amrith Shenoy (Syndicate Member), Janardhan Thonse(UUDA Chairman), Sarala Kanchan (Sharada Teacher), Dr Sunitha Shetty, Madhavi Karkala, Asha, Poornima Achar, Suchithra and Kajol were felicitated for their achievements.

Janardhan Poojary, former union minister and chief guest of the function, said that Sonia Gandhi has led the Indian National Congress in its crucial stages. “Her efficiency and leadership has helped Congress to win a dedicated mandate. Rahul Gandhi has to learn a lot from Sonia Gandhi to lead the Congress party. Sonia has led a delegation to former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s house when the CBI issued summons but Rahul has not shown his presence there. She is fighting hard for the sake of farmers against the ordinance to land acquisition act but Rahul is on leave. Sonia’s leadership will strengthen the perspectives of the party.”

“Women play an important role in nurturing the lives of their children. The first women Prime Minister of India was Indira Gandhi, who is a role model to women who want to serve their nation by entering politics. Women participation is increasing in the politics which is the symbol of prosperity and equality. The gram Panchayat elections are nearing and women should actively participate in the same,” he added.

He directed the Congress women members to pass a resolution urging Sonia Gandhi to lead the Congress party and also the state government to drop the proposal of issuing licenses to new liquor shops.

Udupi MLA Pramod Madhwaraj, Byndoor MLA Gopal Poojary former MLA Gopal Bhandary, Veronica Cornelio, Jayashree Krishnaraj, Meenakshi Madhva, Roshani Olivera and others were present.
