Udupi RTO R M Varnekar Suspended for Accepting Bribe
Bengaluru: The Commissioner of transport and road safety has issued the suspension order of Udupi Regional Transport Officer (RTO) R M Varnekar on the charges of accepting bribe from a car owner.
Udupi Regional Transport Officer (RTO) R M Varnekar was caught receiving bribe from Vignesh for clearing his vehicle’s road tax documents. Vignesh works with an IT company and had purchased a second-hand car a month ago, which was gutted in the fire incident during Aero India in Bengaluru recently. As he used the car only for a month, he was eligible to get the road tax back. Hence he had applied for documents from the transport office. Vignesh had already received his car insurance amount of Rs 3 lakh and had applied for documents to submit it for the refund. He was supposed to get Rs 65,000 as road tax.
Vernekar demanded 10% of the amount received. Vignesh refused to pay the bribe and brought the matter to the notice of ACB on March 15. Vignesh filed a complaint against Varneker, on March 16, Varnekar was caught red-handed by the ACB police while accepting the bribe from Vignesh.
The Anti Corruption Bureau (ACB) sleuths raided the residence of the Udupi RTO, R M Varnekar for disproportionate assets to known sources of income and unearthed Rs 70.18 lakh from his house on March 18.
