Udupi Sri Krishna Temple Stops ‘Ede Ede Snana’ during Shasti Celebrations
Udupi: The Udupi Krishna Temple with a history of over 800 years witnessed a special celebration on Thursday, December 13. The Made Snana or Ede Snana which has been criticized for several years was stopped during the Shasti celebrations. By not performing Made Snana or Ede Snana at the Sri Krishna Math the Paryaya Palimar Swamiji has launched a new tradition in Udupi.
Ede Snana is a modified version of Made Made Snana (a ritual of rolling over the food eaten by the people of the upper caste) which has been stayed by the Supreme Court. After the Supreme Court order the Pejawar Math’s Sri Vishwesha Theertha Swamiji objected Made Made Snana and asked to perform Ede Ede Snana—a ritual of rolling over the Prasadam offered to the deity of Subrahmanya at Sri Krishna Temple. After the call by Pejawar Swamiji devotees were performing Ede Ede Snana since 2016 at Sri Krishna Temple.
During the Ede Ede Snana ritual, the Prasadam was first offered to the deity, which was kept on the plantain leaves, the devotees then rolled over the Prasadam.
But this year Paryaya Palimar Swamiji celebrated Shasti Celebrations at Sri Krishna Temple in a grand manner. The Swamiji offered prayers to Subramanya deity and later the devotees symbolically took three dips in the Madhwa Sarovara and rolled over on the ground around the Subramanya Gudi.
Speaking to Media persons, Palimar Swamiji said “Earlier devotees were performing Made made Snana in Sri Krishna Temple; after the Supreme Court order Pajawar Swamiji has given a call to the devotees to perform Ede Ede Snana. But this time we decided to stop both Made made Snana and Ede Ede Snana. Many people objected to the Ede Ede Snana so this time we arranged to serve Prasadam to the devotees at the Bhojana Shala of the Sri Krishna Math,” he said.
Sri Vishwesha Theertha Swamiji of Pejawar Math has welcomed the decision of Palimar Swamiji to stop the Ede Ede Snana at Sri Krishna Temple. “If there is opposition in the name of caste then it turns in to conflict. Made Snana or Ede Snana is not necessary in Temples. There is no any harm to Hinduism,” Swamiji said.
