“MESCOM officials delay electricity connections to the poor but they process the files of corporate establishments faster, sometimes even without following necessary procedures. A probe will be initiated against the officials involved in the same after consultations with the Energy Department.”

The Assistant Engineer of MESCOM in his report said that they have served a disconnection notice to the Manipal University for 7 days. The Manipal University has approached the High Court and the court has issued a stay order. CMC Commissioner Manjunathayya said that as MESCOM and CMC are the respondents in the case, both parties should file an appeal in the court.

Manjunathayya was briefed on the norms of grating permission for temporary licences by the Assistant Engineer. Manjunathayya said that as the university has connected the power cables of the newly built hostel to the existing grid without obtaining door number and occupancy certificate, it was a clear violation of the norms. He urged the MESCOM department to take a serious note of the issue.

Councilor Ramesh Kanchan said that irregularities in parking facilities at KMC hospital were creating hurdles for the public. The police inspector of Manipal station said that the department has effectively installed no-parking signs at both sides of road. Councillor Mahesh Thakur said that parking problems should be resolved soon after consultations with the police department.

Opposition leader Dr M R Pai said that a leading daily had carried news of Ramesh Kanchan abusing opposition members by calling them ‘rascals’ and demanded necessary action against Kanchan. Ramesh Kanchan said that Dr M R Pai had also abused a former independent councilor Nithyananda Volakadu and he did not need lessons from Dr Pai. A war of words was witnessed among the members on the issue. Later, president Yuvraj pacified the members and the meeting resumed.

Councilor Prashanth Amin said that restrictions on sand mining was delaying the construction works. He urged the president to draft a letter to the government urging relaxation on the same.

Thereafter, the Environmental Engineer of Mangalore City Corporation Sadananda Shetty briefed the council on the effective planning of waste management by displaying slides on the waste management undertaken in MCC.

Vice-President Amrutha Krishnamurthy; Vijay Manchi, President Standing Committee, Councilors and others were present.
