Udupi ZP members laud DC Priyanka’s raid on sand mafia
Manipal: The Zilla Panchayat members have condemned the attack on the deputy commissioner and assistant commissioner during the raid on sand mining areas. In a press meet held at Dr V.S Acharya Memorial Hall, Rajathadri Manipal ZP President Dinakar Babu said that the issues on illegal sand mining were raised in ZP meetings and the deputy commissioner together with the assistant commissioner has taken the bold by raiding the sand mining areas.
ZP members used to raise concern on the sand mafia in Udupi but the state government’s reluctance in framing a sand mining code has led to illegal sand mining in the district. The Zilla Panchayat urges the police department to initiate stringent action on the accused who were involved in attacking the deputy commissioner, he added.
ZP Vice President Sheela K Shetty said that people have lauded the efforts of the deputy commissioner in taking stern action against the offenders involved in illegal sand mining. The government should soon formulate a sand mining code to crack down on the illegal sand mining.
Opposition leader Janardhan Thonse said that the issues should not be politicised rather the efforts of the deputy commissioner should be supported.
ZP Members Babu Shetty, Sudhakar Shetty, Reshma Shetty, Shilpa Suvarna, Gowri Devadiga and others were present.
