Udupians run 5 K to spread awareness on drug abuse

Udupi: The 5k awareness Run against Drug abuse organized by Udupi district police, Udupi district working Journalist’s Association, Udupi Press Club in association with Manipal Academy of Higher Education was held on September 23.

The 5K run was flagged off by Laxman Nimbargi superintendent of Police Udupi district along with Dr H S Ballal Pro-chancellor of MAHE at the Manipal Edu building.

Around 3000 People from all walks of life and age including SP Laxman Nimbargi, Additional SP Kumarchandra, DySP’s Dinesh Kumar, Belliyappa, Dinesh Kumar and more than 100 police officials, Manipal staff and students participated in the marathon.

The run passed through KMC FC, MCOPS, Upendra Pai Circle, Syndicate Circle, Venugopal Temple, MIT Swimming pool, Vishveshvaraiya road towards MIT main gate, Kamath Café, Tiger Circle and culminated at the Edu Building.

The valedictory function was held at the KMC Greens. In his message, Laxman Nimbargi said, “It is unfortunate that the youth are becoming victims of drug addiction. Parents should shape their children into responsible citizens by providing them orientation on the culture of the land. Positive contribution to society could not be expected from the youth who are addicted to narcotics,” he said.

Laxman Nimbargi further said, “The Udupi police along with the district working journalists’ Association and Udupi Press Club have been conducting many programmes to create awareness on the devastating effects of drug abuse over the past two months. The objective behind the initiative is to ensure that Manipal remains drug-free. Programmes to create awareness on the evils of drug abuse should be held regularly on campuses of educational institutions. Drug abuse needs to be eradicated to create a healthy society”, he said.

MAHE Pro-Chancellor Dr H S Ballal in his message said that India has huge youth population. It is, therefore, necessary to create awareness on the negative impact of drug abuse. Dr Ballal urged the students to stay away from drug addiction and take the oath that they will never even try to taste any drug.

Pro Vice-Chancellor of Health Sciences Dr Poornima Baliga, Bhaskar Hande general Manager Syndicate Bank, Ganesh Prasad Pandelu president Udupi district working Journalist’s Association, Nagaraj Rao convener Udupi Press Club, Dr Vinod Nayak were also present.

Drug misuse awareness should be spread as widely and as deeply as possible in every segment of our society all over India. Every man and a woman – young or old, should be made fully aware of the consequences that are attached to our homes and our society. Misuse of drugs can destroy any individual or any family, and the epidemic will spread rapidly all over the neighborhood and the society that we live in.
