Unity in Diversity marks First-ever Saree Walk and Run in Mangaluru

Mangaluru: The Mangaluru Women’s Run Troupe organized the first ever “Saree Walk & Run” from the Mahatma Gandhi Park, Mannagudda Road here on August 12.

The “Saree Walk & Run” was flagged off by the Proprietor of www.mangalorean.com Violet Pereira along with the Corporator of the area Jayanti Achar from the Mahatma Gandhi Park. More than 500 women dressed in sarees participated in the run and walk. A woman aged 72 years also participated in the run.

Speaking to mangalorean.com one of the organizers Rajesh said, “This is an awareness programme on keeping oneself healthy and fit, keeping fit is very important for women as well. There is a feeling among most women that only certain type of dress should be worn during exercise. To let women know that even wearing a saree it is possible to run or exercise, we had planned to organize the “Saree Walk and run”. A total of 650 women had registered and 500 women turned up for the event. This was a successful event as we organized it for the first time in Mangaluru.”

Speaking to mangalorean.com Maya who completed the Saree run first, said, “All can take part in this walk or run. Everybody can run or walk whatever their age. People think that they cannot do it. Some women feel shy to take part wearing the saree and think that they cannot participate. All can run, whatever their age it will not make any difference. For those who sit at home, it is high time for all of us to get together and hold such marathons which will unite us. I am very happy that I have completed the run first.”

Speaking to mangalorean.com the oldest participant Madhavi who is 72-year old said, “I am very happy to complete this run. I have been walking every day for many years to keep myself fit. To maintain our health, exercise is very much important.

Pratibha speaking to mangalorean.com said,”This saree walk & run was a very good experience. I feel good about taking part in this event. I was waiting for this day. I am 63, every day I practice Yoga. Young people should join such events, I have seen only women above 50 coming to Yoga classes. All should participate in such events and keep fit.”

Pushpa Mallya (64) said, “This is a good opportunity given to women. We are walking daily but this saree walk & run is different. I think such events should get more publicity so that we can encourage young women to take part in such events.

Participants from 18 years to 72 years participated in the Saree Walk & Run. Participation certificates and medals were given to all the participants. Prizes were distributed to those dressed in Traditional saree, individual woman and group, slogan on fitness and Saree Walk & Run group with the largest member of participants.
