London, Nov 29 (IANS) Leicester striker Jamie Vardy Leicester broke the English Premier League record by scoring for the 11th straight game in a 1-1 draw with Manchester United on Saturday.

Vardy scored in the 24th minute to give Leicester a 1-0 lead at King Power Stadium, breaking former Manchester United forward Ruud van Nistelrooy’s mark of 10 matches, which was achieved across two seasons in 2003, Xinhua news agency reported.

Manchester United levelled the score before half-time when Bastian Schweinsteiger headed home a Daley Blind corner. One point was not enough for Leicester to keep their one-week old Premier League lead as Manchester City’s 3-1 win over Southampton took them top on goal difference.

Leicester are second and Manchester United third.

“It’s unbelievable, I got a bit carried away with myself,” Vardy said. “There has been a lot of focus on me (but) I have kept my head down and not tried to think too much about it. I knew it would be a battle against Chris Smalling and it was an entertaining one for the neutrals.”

City went ahead just nine minutes to action as Belgium forward Kevin De Bruyne opened the scoring. Fabian Delph made it 2-0 11 minutes later.

Shane Long pulled one back for Southampton in the 49th minute and Aleksandr Kolarov sealed the victory for City 20 minutes from time.

“I was very pleased with the team’s reaction,” Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini said. “It was important to get three points against a team who were unbeaten away.We were a little nervous until the third goal, but I’m happy with the performance and the result.”

Elsewhere, Crystal Palace crushed Newcastle United 5-1, Sunderland beat Stoke City 2-0, Aston Villa remain bottom after losing to Watford 2-3, Bournemouth tied Everton 3-3.
