Vellore: The 1,180 students of Sigaram Matriculation Higher Secondary School at Chettiyappanoor, near Vaniyambadi, set a world record by creating the “world’s largest national flag made with salt” on the school premises on Sunday, the eve of Republic Day.
The students started work at 6.30 a.m. and completed the 3,456-sq.m flag by 11.30 a.m. As much as 43,200 kg of salt and 1,600 kg of colour powder went into its making.
M.S. Irfan Ahmed, adjudicator, Asian Records Academy, Singapore; P. Jeganathan, records manager for Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, India Records Academy, Mumbai; and L. Raj Krishna, inspection officer, Tamilan Book of Records, Chennai, adjudicated the record. Representatives of Elite World Records U.K. Private Ltd., London, watched the event on Skype and declared the record, a school spokesman said.
The world record in this category was held by the Singapore Youth Club by making a 2,081-sq.m national flag with 1,800 participants in 18 hours on August 9, 2012.
District Collector, Vellore, R. Nanthagopal presented a certificate to M. Vimalan, school joint secretary.
