VHP Condemns Assault on Kukke Subramanya Priest, Urges DC to Investigate Matter

Mangaluru: “Everyone knows that temples and maths are sacred to society. However, the events that transpired in Kukke Subramanya on June 2 have caused all of us pain. Such events must be put to a stop. Some elements have tried to disrupt the peace of the temple recently. Yesterday, we called all of our workers here and spoke to them to find out the truth. On June 2, they placed a phone call saying that the Sarpa Samskara ritual should take place in the Samputa Narasimhaswamy Math. On the evening of June 1, two individuals asked the priest to take them to the Math as they didn’t know the route. On the way to the Math, two other people stopped them and assaulted the priest”, said VHP State President Professor M B Puranik in a press meet held at the VHP Office, Kadri here, on June 5.

Addressing the mediapersons Puranik said, “The culprits took the priest to the temple office and assaulted him there. Who has given him this authority? Why was the eyewitness just watching? After the assault, the priest was hospitalized and a minor complaint was filed against the accused. This feud between the temple and the Math is over the Sarpa Samskara ritual. The temple authorities are saying that the Math should not carry out any rituals when the ritual is going on in the temple. However, no one can stop an interested devotee from participating in the ritual held at the Math. It is my religious right granted to me by the Constitution of India.”

He further said, “The temple authorities have even put up a board saying that the ritual should not be commissioned anywhere else apart from the temple or else the Lord will not be pleased. It is wrong for them to put up this sign. Despite the notice, devotees still opt for the Narasimhaswamy Math. VHP has submitted a letter to both parties asking them to peacefully resolve the matter internally and not put it for display in front of the whole community. We have also written a letter to the Deputy Commissioner to launch a full-scale, comprehensive investigation into the assault case.”

VHP district leaders Sharan Pumpwell, Jagadish Shenva, and others were also present.
