Victim of Brahmavara Accident Gave Life to 8 Patients through Organ Donation

Manipal: A road accident at 1 pm on May 27th, 2019 in Brahmavar left Mr. Sudeep was severely injured and he was admitted to Kasturba Hospital in Manipal,

Mr. Sudeep Poojary was officially declared brain dead by the doctors at 9.15 pm on May 28th, 2019 as per the the 1994 Human Rights Act. Subsequently, Mr. Sudeep Poojary’s elder brothers, Sandeep Poojary and Pradeep Poojary expressed their willingness to donate viable organs. Two corneas, two kidneys, Liver, Pancreas, Heart, and Lungs were harvested. The harvested organs helped save the lives of eight people. As per the Jeevasarthakathe (previously ZCCK) protocols and decisions, two corneas and two kidneys were retained by Kasturba Hospital Manipal for the registered patients while the liver and pancreas were sent to patients of BGS Hospital Bengaluru and the Heart valve and Lungs to the patients of BGS Hospital Chennai.

Mr. Sandeep Poojary & Mr. Pradeep Poojary, the elder brothers of the deceased, said, “Organ donation is a noble cause and our brother has committed a great deed even in his death”. Medical Superintendent Dr. Avinash Shetty said, “The organ donation is a great work to save lives, and people should encourage such good things. The media should play a vital role in delivering the matter to the public” he added.

The harvested organs were transferred to Bengaluru at 7 am on May 29th, 2019. With the support of the Udupi Police Department, the organs were transported from Manipal to Mangaluru International Airport via a Green Corridor.
