War of words witnessed between councillors at CMC meeting
Udupi: The City Municipality Council general meeting witnessed the councillors engaged in war of words on the tendering process of Vishweshwaraiah building on Tuesday December 27.
CMC president Meenakshi Madhav Bannanje objected to the questioning of Vishweshwaraiah building. During the question hour as the matter related to the tendering process was in the agenda, councillor Yaspal Suvarna said that the state governments order to re-tender the Vishweshwaraiah building was a matter of shame to Udupi. The government has pointed out irregularities as the tender which had a single participant was approved without consulting with the opposition.
Opposition party Councillor Yaspal Suvarna said that the president needed to respond to the queries raised by the opposition for which Meenakshi rejected and said that she would answer while the subject comes for discussion as per the agenda. Angered by the answer given by the president BJP Members stormed into the well of the house. Meenakshi said that if the BJP leaders had any respect towards women they need to remain calm and return back to their seats.
The concerned engineer said that when the tender process was initiated only one bidder participated in the tender. When the tender process was finalized and sent for approval, the state government has ordered for re-tendering so that more bidders will participate in the tendering process.
Ramesh Kanchan and M R Pai were involved in war of words and later with the president consoling the members the meeting resumed. Ramesh Kanchan questioned on the steps taken to supply drinking water as summer is approaching. Engineer Shashidar Hegde said that the outflow of water in Shiroor and Baje dam will continue for another 10 days; the CMC has approached the deputy commissioner seeking permission to remove the silt. The members urged to disconnect electricity connections given to farmers near dams for irrigation.
Former President Yuvraj said that an illegal building is coming up near Nittur, and the officials have failed in initiating action for which CMC Commissioner Manjunathayya said that he would initiate appropriate action.
Councillor Prasahanth Bhat said that security guards of KMC hospital were locking vehicles like traffic police, the CMC members urged the CMC administration to take a serious cognizance of the issue by forming a committee to probe the land extent of KMC.
