Warning to Fishermen NOT to Venture into Sea Due to Rough Weather

Mangaluru: A warning has been issued through a circular by the Duty Officer, Meteorological Centre-Bengaluru, to the Fishermen in Mangaluru, Karwar, Panambur, Honnavar, Bhatkal, Gangoli/Kundapur, Malpe, Murdeshwar, Kumta, Gokarna, and few other coastal areas stating, ” For next 24 hours valid from 1400 Hours IST of 22nd May 2018, there will be Morning’s low pressure area over southeast Arabian Sea with associated upper air cyclonic circulation extending up to 3.6 km above mean sea level persists. It is very likely to concentrate into a depression during next 48 hours and further into a cyclonic storm during subsequent 48 hours. It is very likely to move West-Northwestwards towards South Oman-Southeast Yemen coasts during next 5 days.”

“As the system is expected to move away from Indian coast, no adverse weather is expected along and off west coast of India. However, with the formation of depression, squally winds speed reaching 45-55 kmph gusting to 65 kmph would commence over central parts of South Arabian Sea from 21st and over west central Arabian Sea from 23rd May. The wind speed will gradually increase over these regions with the increase in intensity of the system during 22nd to 26th May. Sea condition will be rough to very rough from 21st onwards over central parts of South Arabian Sea and from 23rd May onwards over west central Arabian Sea. Sea condition will gradually become high to very high over west central and adjoining southwest Arabian Sea during 22nd to 26th May with intensification of the system.”

“Fishermen are advised not to venture into central part of south Arabian Sea during 21st -23rd May and over West central and adjoining Southwest Arabian Sea during 23 rd -26th May. Strong winds from Southwesterly to Westerly direction speed occasionally reaching 35-45 kilometers per hour likely along and off Karnataka coast.” said the contents in the circular. In the meantime Deputy Director of Fisheries Mahesh Kumar speaking to media has said,”We have already warned the fishermen not to venture into the sea for the next 48 hours. Since ban on fishing will be imposed from June 1 for the next 60 days, the fishermen have left for deep sea fishing. They will not be able to return by May 28. Yet we have warned them about the unpredictable weather”. But reports indicate as of now, fishing has not been affected much, and fishermen are still on the fishing spree.
