We need to be more consistent: Windies captain Holder

Wellington, March 21 (IANS) West Indies captain Jason Holder on Saturday said the side had seen a lot of ups and downs in the cricket World Cup and consistency is a must in the coming days.

“We have just been obviously inconsistent from the tour of South Africa to this World Cup. We have had some good games and we have had some bad games but we have never been consistent,” Holder said.

“So I think going forward, we have got to be a lot more consistent than we have been at the moment,” Holder said.

When asked about Chris Gayle’s fitness and how he faced the run chase, the skipper said, “Chris has been the same he has been in the last few days. He’s never been one of the most agile players around, and he’s quite slow and that’s Chris.”

“We needed him to come out and be fairly aggressive. We were chasing 394, so we just couldn’t play that. Credit to him for the way he played.”

The West Indies will next travel to England for a Test series. The skipper pointed out that the players will currently enjoy some quality time back home with their families after touring for over four months.

“We’ve been on the road for four months now, and it’s been a long time away from home. The guys have put their bodies on the line for the last four months, and we’ve been away from our families for four months.

“So the first thing to do is refresh a bit at home. We have a few days before we head into the training camp before the England series,” Holder said.

Former Caribbean all-rounder Phil Simmons will take over as the new coach of the West Indies. Speaking about the new inclusion, Holder said he is looking forward to working with him.

“Phil Simmons is the new coach. We don’t have one-day-international (ODI) until the end of the year. We’ll obviously sit down and come up with a plan going forward.

“But, yeah, on the bright side we don’t have to worry about it. This is my first time working with Phil, so looking forward to that,” the skipper said.
