Website Impact! MCC fixes Open Pit within 12 Hours
Mangaluru: Yet another feather in the camp for Mangalorean.com- Yes, once again we have proved one more positive result after highlighting the issue in Mangalorean.com-Talk about the power of media, especially Electronic media where we highlight the civic issues and within few hours or few days the concerned authorities who can’t bear the criticism about their negligence, quickly get into action and rectify the civic issues. In the past Mangalorean.com has highlighted various civic issues through our website, and there has been a tremendous effect with most of the problems being fixed in no time, from rectifying dilapidated roads, open drainage, non-friendly footpaths, dog menace, neglected garbage, illegal hoardings, pot holes etc.
Before
These days driving or riding on the City streets is kind of dangerous, for the fact due to lots of obstacles from increasing vehicles, unsafe road constructions, huge potholes, stray animals running around, etc etc and apart from many of these obstacles are incomplete drainage or road maintenance work. On April 7, 2017, a report “Death Trap! Open Pit in middle of Kadri Road a Safety Hazard” (Article link: https://www.mangalorean.com/death-trap-open-pit-in-middle-of-kadri-road-a safety-hazard/) pertaining to a dug up road near City Hospital, opposite to Susheela Niketan Apartments on Kadri Road- Mangaluru- and this spot was left unattended for weeks. Even though the problem of water pipe or drainage issue had been fixed, but the labourers had left behind a huge pit. The only thing that was blocking this spot was a yellow barricade, without any reflectors on it.
In our report, we had questioned why MCC workers or any other private contractors who took up the work never filled up the pit, which was a safety hazard for the motorists, especially at night. This was a busy road with private uses plying locally in high speed, including also the service buses plying between Mangaluru and Karkala/Moodbidri- also plying under rash conditions- and in between these monster buses, are the light vehicles plying on this stretch of the road. And this obstacle sitting right in the middle of the road for days was indeed a dangerous safety hazard for the motorists. Why MCC was turning a blind eye against this issue. They will only wake up and rectify the issue, once someone gets injured or when a life is lost. Do the city officials ever bother to look at the civic work that has been taken up. Our report which was emailed and sent by Whatsapp/facebook to the Mayor did receive quick action from MCC, with the open pit fully concreted the next day.
After
Even though the labourers left the concrete for curing for few days, as of today the spot is clear for smooth movement of traffic without any obstacle. Imagine, if Team Mangalorean had not highlighted this safety issue of open pit left unattended for days, motorists would have still faced this safety obstacle even today. Now that our report has solved yet another road safety issue, there could be many such out there in the nooks and corners of the city. So we have all these incomplete and hazardous streets. Another major problem facing the motorists/pedestrians is that when the roads are dug for concretization or drainage/or pipeline work the city’s streets take a severe beating. This education hub is now like a middle-aged bachelor, with the government and MCC trying to dress him up with all sorts of cosmetics while the vital aspects are being sidelined. With half the city being dug up for one or the other reason the traffic appear to be going haywire while the pedestrians are scampering for safety. (There is yet another new concrete road near Jimmy’s Super Market on the way to Nanthoor that has been dug up to construct a new manhole- report on this soon)
Walking around the dug up areas is endangering their safety. It is a carnage out there. What is the condition of the streets that you trudge on? Just look at some of the perils of driving/riding or even walking on Mangaluru’s streets. If Mangaluru’s streets could talk, they’d have many a tale to tell. These incomplete drainage/pipeline/road work is posing a danger to human life, including the spot which we just highlighted near City Hospital-Kadri Road). While some could claim that these have sent people to the hospital with injuries, some others would state that they have claimed lives! Even today, when there is so much conversation about road safety, and despite citizens being at the fore of this conversation, many roads are very hazardous. Or even if they are present, they are not usable, either because of defects in the structure or because somebody had decided to dig it for a minor drainage or pipeline, just like the one here on Kadri Road or near Jimmy’s Supermarket
