Website Impact! Police Crack Down on Illegal Parking on footpath near Reliance Smart Supermarket

Mangaluru: Talk about magic that issues highlighted in Mangalorean.com are getting rectified in no time- so, once again Mangalorean.com has proved one more positive result after highlighting another civic issue -Talk about the power of media, especially Electronic media where we highlight the civic issues and within a few hours or couple of days the concerned authorities who can’t bear the criticism about their negligence, quickly get into action and rectify the civic issues. In the past Mangalorean.com has highlighted various civic issues through our website, and there has been a tremendous effect with most of the problems being fixed in no time, from rectifying dilapidated roads, open drainage, non-friendly footpaths, dog menace, neglected garbage, illegal hoardings, pot holes, dying trees etc.

Following an article “https://www.mangalorean.com/not-so-smart-citizens-park-vehicles-on-footpath-near-reliance-smart-supermarket-in-smart-city/ “dated 22 July 2019 in Mangalorean.com about the illegal parking on footpaths by customers of Reliance Smart Supermarket, near Chilimbi/Urwa-Mangaluru, and after the article link was sent to Police commissioner Sandeep Patil, and DCP (Traffic) Manjunath Shetty, within a couple of days the police have started cracking down illegally parked vehicles near that area, a bunch of four-wheelers were locked, while few other two-wheelers were towed away. This is a very good move by the police department on such motorists who don’t use their common sense or just trying to be ignorant, thereby putting pedestrians into hardship and forcing them to use the road to walk.

BEFORE THE REPORT WAS PUBLISHED

Ever since this new mega supermarket “Reliance Smart opened on Kulur Ferry Road, Chilimbi, near to Urwa Store-Mangaluru, in the month of May 2019, people have been flocking this store as they have never seen a supermarket or been to one. And the rush is so much, because of super deals the store is offering, the footpaths around this store is seen occupied by cars and two-wheelers- and our lovely City traffic cops have turned a blind eye towards it. So Team Mangalorean took an initiative in highlighting this issue, and the result of the report was a success. And Team Mangalorean was informed by a shopkeeper across from the megastore that these days after the report was published, the traffic cops along with the towing truck have been making constant rounds around that area, which they never did earlier.

One of the security at the supermarket speaking to Team Mangalorean said, “Some two-wheeler riders even if I tell them not to park on the footpath, they are rude, and tell me whether the footpath is owned by me. So it’s hard to deal with such people. But I always make sure that no one parks on the footpath. Since the police have already warned us. But if these motorists don’t listen to us, then they will face the consequences in paying hefty fines plus towing”. Well said by the security man, who is doing is duty, but if people are still ignorant they will pay a price.

AFTER WEBSITE IMPACT!

Team Mangalorean also witnessed that four-wheelers take some extra efforts in parking their vehicles in the store basement parking lot, fearing of their vehicles getting towed. But we were surprised to note, that the building which house this busy supermarket, and also a furniture shop, has parking in the basement only for 15-16 cars. How can MCC give licence for a business when they don’t have the right capacity of parking space? Not Smart at all. Just like a bunch of other mini supermarkets and new restaurants have sprung in town, but none of these have at least some parking or no parking at all- and MCC has given licence for them to operate. I guess bribe/corruption plays the role here.

Pavements are meant for pedestrians to walk on, even though in many cities/towns a part of the pavement have been earmarked for vehicular parking to tackle the problem of lack of parking space. This does not mean that the entire pavement should be blocked by the parked vehicles. The funny part is that MCC has constructed many footpaths recently under the Smart City project, and most of these footpaths are either been used for parking or street vendors doing their illegal business. And among many other examples of such illegal footpath parking, this one near Reliance Smart adds to the credit of citizens ignorance of illegal parking on walkways. The pedestrians have very little option but to walk on the road thereby putting their lives in danger. At times it appears that the pavements are under siege by parked vehicles as seen in the pics in the report.

Allowing vehicle parking (whether two-wheelers or four-wheelers) definitely will lead to harassment to pedestrians sooner or later, and will be hard to regulate. Parking vehicles on the pavement, completely blocking pedestrian passage, is widely prevalent. Team Mangalorean would like to extend heartfelt thanks to Police Commissioner, DCP, ACP and other concerned law enforcement officers, who were directly or indirectly involved in rectifying this issue, and we also request them to continue to crack down on illegal parking in future too- and not just STOP here!
