Wow-This Time MCC removes Illegal Hoardings, including Religious, Politicians, Films, School Admissions, Supermarkets, Mobile Companies, etc. MCC officials have done a great job by removing all illegal flex hoardings/banners irrespective of caste or creed, religious or non-religious, politicians or non-politicians, Schools, Colleges or other institutions etc. That’s how it should be- laws should be equal for everyone. Just see how beautiful and clean the “Smart City” looks without all these hundreds of illegal hoardings/banners displayed everywhere, thereby abusing “Swachh Mangaluru Abhiyan”.

Mangaluru: On the outset a big big thank you…thank you..thank you in millions to MCC Mayor Kavitha Sanil and her MCC officials for taking a bold step in removing all the illegal flex hoardings/banners, not caring whose these hoardings/banners belonged too, including those of Congress leaders, Opposition parties, religious, movies etc. MCC showed that they are mightier than others- my compliments to our courageous and bold “feminine” Mayor Kavitha Sanil- she has proved her woman power. Being a Karate Champion, she is utilizing her talents and power of Karate into action?? I hope she will keep that way till the end of her tenure, and prove herself to be the best “mayor” so far in the history of Mangaluru.

Yes, once again Mangalorean.com has proved one more positive result after highlighting another civic issue -Talk about the power of media, especially Electronic media where we highlight the civic issues and within few hours or few days the concerned authorities who can’t bear the criticism about their negligence, quickly get into action and rectify the civic issues. In the past Mangalorean.com has highlighted various civic issues through our website, and there has been a tremendous effect with most of the problems being fixed in no time, from rectifying dilapidated roads, open drainage, non-friendly footpaths, dog menace, neglected garbage, illegal hoardings, pot holes etc. Team Mangalorean had published a report “https://www.mangalorean.com/if-we-can-spot-illegal-flex-hoardingsbanners-why-cant-mcc/”, and within a couple of days about 99% of illegal flex hoardings/banners have been removed.

Why can’t MCC keep it that way, by not allowing anyone to display hoardings/banners, my implementing certain laws restricting the display of such hoardings/banners, or take severe action against the lawbreakers. The city looks so clean and beautiful without all these illegal publicity materials, so why can’t we keep our city that way all year long. Presently it seems like a drama- with citizens putting up all these illegal hoardings- and in few days MCC getting into action and removing them- and once again the cycle is repeated. Instead of that why can’t we put an end to this kind of drama right now. And MCC can do it because there is a law which prohibits exhibits of hoardings/banners in public places.

As per section of the Karnataka Open Places (Prevention of Disfigurement) Act 1981 states- ” Whoever by himself or through another person, affixes to, or erects, inscribes or exhibits on any place open to public view advertisement without the written permission of the local authority having jurisdiction over such area, shall be punished with imprisonment of either description for a term which may extend to six months or with fine which may extend to one thousand rupees or both”. But how far has this law been strictly enforced by MCC- never. But at least now, MCC can start putting this law into force, and deal with all these people putting up such illegal publicity materials.

Right after we had published the report, Team Mangalorean contacted MCC Revenue Officer Praveen Chandra Karkera on 23 May, about a large number of illegal hoardings spoiling the image of Mangaluru- and he replied saying, ” We will remove all the hoardings by Saturday for sure”. Like he said, it was done, by Saturday afternoon about 99% of illegal publicity materials were removed, at places like Hampankatta Junction, Kankanady, Bunts Hostel, Lady Hill, Kadri, Bendore, Clock Tower, Car Street, Nanthoor junction etc- except for two Congress hoardings still in display near Circuit House (see photo), and one hoarding at Nanthoor – showing respect to Sri Veerendra Hegde left untouched. Other than that this time, MCC officials have done a great job. Kudos- keep it that way in future too.

It’s shame that all these businesses and film industries spoil the beauty of the City by displaying all their illegal flex hoardings in spite of numerous warning from MCC and even there being a law which prohibits them- for that matter a newly opened super market-Martin’s Super Market has hoardings/banners put up all over the city. If all these businesses and film industries have the budget/funds to invest in their projects, why can’t they use some of the funds towards decent kind of publicity, rather than look for free publicity, and destroy the beauty of the City. Shame on these people-Period.

Like I mentioned in my earlier reports, I will say it again, that MCC needs to ban these illegal hoardings-areas are to be designated as “no-hoardings zones”. Strict action should be taken against those breaking the laws. All hoardings that compromise road safety are to be removed, especially those at Hampankatta Circle. MCC should launch a drive to remove all illegal billboards immediately, and also warn about fines if hoardings are erected illegally. MCC should remove hoardings from city junctions as they are hazardous to traffic. In any case hoardings/flex banners, whether legal or illegal, should not be allowed to deface natural beauty, the city’s skyline, or cause safety hazards. No-hoarding zones are the need of the hour!
