Weekly Holiday turns tragic for Friends , Three Drown in Shambahvi river

Mangaluru: In a tragic incident, three friends who had gone for swimming in the Shambhavi river drowned, near Mulki on Sunday July 9.

The deceased have been identified as Mahesh Anchan (28) son of Shivaram and Nalini Achan resident of Athikari Bettu, Akshith Gatti (26) Son of Balakrishna Gatti, from Kasargod and Kishore Poojary (25) Son of Janardhan Poojary of Someshwar.

According to the police, the incident took place in the afternoon when a group of 12 friends had gone out for swimming in the Shambhavi river. Some of them used life jackets while swimming. While they were enjoying in the water, Akshith suddenly drowned, his friends Mahesh and Kishore who were nearby rushed to rescue Akshith. Unfortunately all three were dragged away by strong currents and drowned in the river. Other friends raised the alarm for help.

Immediately locals informed the Mulki Police and the fire service. The bodies were retrieved two hours later with the help of locals and sent for post-mortem to the Mulki Government Hospital.

All the friends are working in a Graphic center in Mangaluru and they had been to Mulki for Picnic.

DK District youth congress president Mithun Rai, former Kannada Sahitya Parishad president Harikrishna Punaroor visited the spot.

A case has been registered in Mulki Police station.

The administration should put a warning signage near to the river to avoid further mishaps ! adventurous people can take the risk to drown !!
