Widespread Damage as Heavy Rains continue to batter Udupi district
Udupi: Incessant rain accompanied by gusty winds that lashed the Udupi district during the past 24 hours has wrecked havoc in various parts and threw normal life out of gear. Low-lying areas have been inundated and trees uprooted in many areas of the district.
Power supply remained disrupted for long hours even in town areas in the district, as electric posts were uprooted when trees fell on power lines.
A huge tree uprooted and fell on the Brahmavar-Hebri stretch of the national highway at Kunjalu bus stand.
Damage to electricity poles has affected power supply from the Cherkadi feeder since Sunday night. Power was not restored till Tuesday morning.
Padisalu, Swarna and Seetha rivers are in spate. The low-lying areas in Brahmavar, Santhekatte, Uppoor, Baikady were inundated. Although heavy rain lashed Sasthan, Saligrama, and Kota, no damage has been reported.
Nearly 40-50 houses were damaged and roofs of many houses blown away due to a windstorm at Pernankila village in Kaup taluk
According to Mescom officials, 43 electricity poles have been uprooted in the district in the last two days.
Following the inclement weather, fishermen have not ventured into the sea. As a result, mechanised boats have been anchored at Malpe.
