With Determination and Strong Will, Differently-abled St Aloysius Pre-University Lad Vignesh T Rao Writes II PU Board Exam at Besant PU College-Mangaluru, and Scores 83.33%. Vignesh Rao suffers from a head injury, motor disability and speech impairment, due to a freak accident at home in the year 2013, when he was in 5th grade. Despite his physical limitations Vignesh was successful in scoring 83.33% (500/600) in the II PUC Board Examination 2020, is quite remarkable!
Mangaluru: For thousands of nervous students frowned over dog-eared textbooks minutes prior to the state board’s PUC II Year exam, but for 18-year-old St Aloysius PU Evening College (SAPUEC) -Mangaluru student, Vignesh T Rao there was a bigger test to pass. After all, dictating answers you cannot write yourself because with a head injury, motor disability and also speech impairment, doesn’t make for the best circumstance to work out derivations or calculate accountancy numbers. But he did it through sheer force of will and determination, and luckily a I year student from SAPUEC was arranged by the college to write these answers for him at Besant PU College, recently.
And this good Samaritan who volunteered to be the scribe was Preetham Krishna, a I year St Aloysius PUC Arts student. Even though being a student of St Aloysius PUC Evening College, Vignesh had to appear for his II PU exam at Besant P U College, since the Exam board had changed the rules, that students of the same college can’t write their exams at the same college. And of thousands of students that appeared for the II PU board examinations in Dakshina Kannada, Vignesh Rao, the Differently-abled student from St Aloysius PUC was one among them- and he secured 83.33% .
Bringing about a change in callous attitudes may take some time, but till then reservation empowers the physically challenged not just in their profession but also in their lives. What it establishes is a precedent and more than one role model. In this case, we have Vignesh as a role model and inspiration to other students that in spite of him being differently-abled, he was very much determined and committed to answer his exams. But Vignesh has never given up hopes, he is always smiling and looking forward to better days to come in his life.
Speaking to Team Mangalorean, T Subramanya Rao (49), the father of Vignesh who is a auto-rickshaw driver, prior to which he owned a General Store but didn’t succeed in that business, said “ My son Vignesh had a freak accident when he was in 5th grade. While he was playing around the house, he accidentally fell from a higher level right on the house gate, which had protruding rods. One of the rods pierced right into his head, and he was left with severe bleeding, leading to unconsciousness. We got him admitted to A J Hospital & Research Centre, where he was under treatment for three months, of which one and a half month he remained unconscious. With great efforts put in by the doctors at AJ Hospital, which I am very much grateful, my son got his second life, and he is recuperating, however, he is still under home treatment, including various therapies. Since he has no body balance, he finds it hard to sit or stand, therefore, me and my wife ( Nalini S Rao (47), a home-maker) help him in his day to day activities”.
“After completing his early studies and high school at Ashoka Vidyalaya in Ashoknagar, Mangaluru, we admitted him to St Aloysius PUC Evening College, and I used to drop him and pick him up in my auto. Now that he completed his PUC with good grades, he wants to continue his Commerce degree classes at St Aloysius, since his aim is to become a Chartered Accountant after graduation. We are happy for our son, whose hard work and determination has paid off. We won’t let him down, and we are ready to any extent to ensure that he has a bright future in spite of his disabilities. Words can’t express the tremendous support and encouragement rendered by the Principal, the Jesuit priests, teachers and staff at SAPUC, during my son’s academic years there. My sincere thanks also to the HM and teachers at Ashoka Vidyalaya, who took very good care of my son, during is early schooling. Thanks also to Preetham Krishna for being his scribe during the exam. And to everyone who had been supportive to our family during hardship, a BIG thank You- you all have made a difference in my son’s life, including Team Mangalorean” added Subramanya very emotionally.
Also speaking Vignesh said, ” I always wanted to take active part in co-curricular activities and sports, unfortunately due to my disability I can’t involve in any such activities. Instead I have been concentrating more on my studies, and it did help in me scoring good grades in my II PUC exams. I will be continuing my degree classes in commerce at the same institution. My aim is to become an Chartered Accountant, if everything goes on well. This achievement in II PU exam is special for me and I am elated. I think my hard work, determination, concentration, strong will and commitment were the secrets to my success. I attribute my success to my college principal Fr Clifford Sequeira Sj, who has always supported me, and also the teachers, staff besides my parents and friends”
” Besides imparting us valuable lessons, my teachers had provided me notes which helped me score well. Right now I don’t have any ambition, let me complete my graduation and only after that I will decide on my future- even though my aim is to become a CA. A big and tons of thanks to everyone who had been part of my life so far, and I also look forward to their support in future too. Not to forget my parents, they have been my supporting pillars, and I owe my humble gratitude to them. Please remember me in your prayers for my good health” added Vignesh.
St Aloysius PU Evening College Principal Fr Clifford Sequeira SJ speaking to Team Mangalorean said, ”Physical disabilities did not deter Vïgnesh from attending college regularly and writing the all important PUC board examination this year. What’s more, he came out in flying colours with a high first class bringing cheer to his parents and laurels to the college. I appreciate the determination the boy displayed to fight the odds and obstacles to reach his goal. He has dug deep down into himself to find hope and encouragement in order to live a fruitful life. Hats off to him on his commendable achievement. The college had done everything to support him academically. The Management, myself, the staff and the students congratulate Vignesh for his remarkable feat. I thank the staff for the care and concern shown to him. We wish that he experiences complete recovery and leads a normal life and achieves great success. We wish him all luck and success in his future studies. May God bless Him”.
In conclusion, like they “Don’t judge a book by its cover, instead judge it by its contents’, similarly, we shouldn’t judge a person by his/her outer look or those with disabilities, or criticize them, instead judge them by their abilities and qualities- and Vignesh T Rao is a perfect example and a role model for others.
