Mangaluru: Off late, the pressure is a lot on teachers and principals to conceive and deliver a program at the time of Annual Day/Function which is as good as it is shown during the reality shows and award nite’s on the TV channels. The entire production values involved with the programme have gone upstream. For most of the programmes nowadays, the organizers have a binding theme. And for that matter, St Aloysius Gonzaga BSE School organized their 7th Annual School Day with the theme “Excellence Through Service”, thereby highlighting the importance of service and training in order to achieve excellence!

Following close on its heels, right after the conclusion of the Inaugural and Blessing Ceremony of the New School Building of St Aloysius Gonzaga BSE School, the management, Staff and students of the School hosted the Annual Day. The programme began with a prayer song, followed by a welcome dance. The welcome address was delivered by Fr Melwin Mendonca SJ- the Manager of the School, where he also said ” St Aloysius Institutions are always in the forefront in providing quality education and takes the lead to try new initiatives, while at the same time upholding its fine tradition of providing quality education. The school commits itself to provide a safe and intellectually challenging environment that will empower students to become innovative thinkers, creative problem solvers and inspired learners prepared to thrive in the twenty-first century. The school comprises of a very caring and committed staff and our goal is to help each student strive to reach his/her fullest potential”.

“Our vision is to ensure that each student who enters the portals of St Aloysius Institutions shall leave with abundant respect for self and others and the capability to meet the challenges of tomorrow. Our Mission is to work together and to create a student centred environment that fosters healthy living, lifelong learning and responsible citizenship. All students are taught the skills and values necessary for success in education, life and work. They leave our portals as well educated citizens who have the capability, confidence and independence to make a positive contribution to our society. We also value the partnership with our parent community that is so vital in school improvement. A strong relationship between the school, the student and the home will maximize the educational experience for each student”added Fr Melwin SJ.

During the Annual report by Ms Grace Noronha, the Principal of the School, she said, “Our school has an excellent reputation and provides a vibrant and harmonious community for the students and staff alike. The school represents the transformation stage of education globally. Its vision is to educate young minds and foster ethical, social and moral values through holistic learning, for them to bloom into responsible global citizens. With its wonderful infrastructure and all modern amenities, we are now poised for an enviable growth in the field of education making itself the preferred choice for qualitative education. Our school motto, “Lucet Et Ardet” (Shine to Enkindle) has guided us in making enormous strides in educating our students and transforming them into men and women for and with others”. The Annual report through Audio Video was presented y school teacher Ms Aparna Suresh, which highlighted the achievements and activities of the School.

The chief guest for the occasion Prof Mathew Ninan, an alumni of St Aloysius Institution, where in his message to the audience spoke of the nostalgic days he had spent at St Aloysius Institution. Stressing on the parents to be role model to their children, Prof Ninan said, “You should be lucky that your children are getting the best education at a renowned and prestigious institution. During our school days we never had the facilities what the present generation has. But sadly the present children are way too much pampered with goodies, and they abuse them. During my school days we had to get a 1st class to get a watch as a gift, but now kids have smartphones, and other electronic gadgets, which basically are ruining their academic life”.

“Another serious issue is that the present students have a problem of depression, which in many cases have led to suicides. This is due to the lack of counseling that these students take extreme steps in ending their lives. Technology is good, but in the same time dangerous too. Children are too much addicted to Internet and other form of digital browsing, they learn bad things through browsing and eventually ruin their precious youth lives. Real happiness only comes through meaningful relationship, and not through Whatsapp, faceBook etc. Quoting William Shakespear “It is a wise child that knows its own father.”, it is important that parents spend more time with their children, so that there won’t be a communication gap. Parents have to a little cautious and keep an eye on their children about their lifestyle and movements. A balanced human being is very important” added Prof Ninan.

In his Presidential address the Provincial of Karnataka Jesuit Province Rev. Dr Stanislaus D’souza began his speech singing few lyrics from a Kannada song, and said that he was proud of St Aloysius Gonzaga Institution, as every child is involved in the day’s celebration. He lauded the Principal and the entire staff for the valuable foundation that the students receive here. He said that every child must dream and work hard to make it a reality. “Education plays a very important role in the all round development of a a child, however, the mere purpose of education is not to create an educate machine but is rather enhancement of personality along with the inclusion of social and moral values. Despite rampant changes in the society one should avoid lack of communication with the children. Communication between the child and his parents, child and his teachers and between teachers and parents should always continue. Many incidents are today taking place as the teachers and the parents are not aware about the real circumstances and the children take wrong steps when they do not know how to overcome the difficulties. Therefore constant interaction between parents and children, Teachers and children is always a must”

This was followed by honouring the toppers in the academics. The vote of thanks was proposed by Iden Crasta and Samradhi Salian, both students, and the entire programme was professionally compered by students- Luke Samson Lobo and Ria Nicole Saldanha. The grandeur in the extravagant cultural programme was witnessed by parents and well wishers. Variety of entertainment in the form of music, songs and dance comprised the cultural programme line up, including a superbly performed skit on the life of Aloysius Gonzaga, choreographed by Pramod Alva and written by Fr Amit SJ. The school band gave a rendition of The Eagles song “Hotel California” got loud applaud from the audience- and Jen Pinto mesmerized the crowd with his talents of strumming the chords on his electric guitar. The spectacular and glittering Annual Day showbiz ended with the reciting of School Anthem, followed by a bunch of pics of the principal and “adorable” teachers clad in glittering sarees for memory sake, clicked by Yours Truly?
