- With Theme ‘Sustentavel’ {that’s in Portuguese, means ‘Sustainable’} St Aloysius College hosts ‘ Econovanza 2018’- a State-Level-Inter-Collegiate Economics Fest
Mangaluru: Even though we have “Extravaganza”, “Bonanza”; etc, but something new has been created by the III rd Year B A students of St Aloysius College {Autonomous} named “ECONOVANZA”, which is the title given for the State-Level Inter-Collegiate Economics Fest, which was held today, 7 August 2018 at the Eric Mathias Hall, St Aloysius College Campus. The Fest comprised of ten different competitions namely- Eco Model Making; Advertising; Budget Preparation; Essay Writing; Quiz; Collage; Turn Coat; Elocution; Fashion Show; and Mocklamation, in which students from 19 colleges from Karnataka participated.
The inaugural programme of the Fest began with a prayer song followed the welcome address by Alwyn Misquith-Staff Coordinator. The Fest was inaugurated by watering a sapling by chief guest Hanumantharaya- DCP {Law and Order} Mangaluru City, along with Fr Praveen Martis Sj, the Principal of St Aloysius College, and President of the occasion; Dr Norbert Lobo-HOD of Economics dept; Reji John and Alwyn Misquith-Staff Coordinators; Suhan Alva and Dzuvino Judith Kuotsu-Student coordinators- the dignitaries also unveiled the trophies stand, which was followed by singing of the theme song ” Sustentavel” by choir team led by Goenkar Savio Barretto.
Addressing the gathering, chief guest Hanumantharaya said, “When an energetic and dynamic student like Suhan Alva approached me to be the chief guest I readily agreed, because I always want to encourage active and determined students, and St Aloysius College is one college has the best students from all over the nation. This Fest is unique, and students organizing an economics fest is something great. Economics is the strength of the nation. Economics is the study of how societies use scarce resources to produce valuable commodities and distribute them among different people. Behind this definition are two key ideas in economics: that goods are scarce and that society must use its resources efficiently. As a police officer, I witness various incidents happening in town. Sadly there is drug abuse among the teens in Mangaluru, which we trying hard to eradicate it”.
“As a student, you should be ambitious and career oriented. Every student is different with different characters and ideas. Develop strong interests, and forget about weaknesses. When you step out of the college make bold plans as what you want to be. Any economics activities should be sustainable, and sustainability comes only if you care for the environment. Sustainability goes hand in hand with the environment. If we want to live longer we need to think and care for Mother Earth. I always stress that students should not abuse the use of mobile phones and other electronic gadgets. You need to read, write and not just browse through the Internet, and copy paste the subject. By reading and writing, you become knowledgeable and smart. Stay away from drugs and alcohol, which will not only ruin yourselves but your parents and your loved ones”, added Hanumantharaya.
He concluded by saying, “Like Japanese who follow three things- respect to parents, teachers and law of the country – you should also follow in their footsteps. Also, follow traffic rules, and not ride triple on two-wheelers and also break other traffic rules. Keep away from bad habits and lead a good young life. Be creative and aim big. Sustainability comes from creativity and ideas. I am sure this Fest will bring the good in you and make you better youth of tomorrow. Best of luck”.
Also speaking Fr Praveen Martis Sj said, “My sincere congratulations to the economics department for this unique Fest. Our institution 139 years ago began with economics dept, and I am proud to say that it is growing strong and reaching greater heights. Economics is an important source for the development of a nation and personal life. You need to share when you think of sustainability. Do things different which can make a difference in others. Don’t always look to win because participation is more important than winning. Take courage and aim for success in your life”.
The inaugural function ended with a mesmerizing dance by the group “Team Velocity”. The vote of thanks was delivered by Judith Koutsu, and compering of the programme was done by Karuna Lobo.
The Valedictory function was held at 4 pm on the same day, where the chief guest was Fr Melwyn Mendonca Sj-Principal of St Aloysius PUC, and guest of honour was Tulu film actor, Arjun Kapikad. The valedictory programme began with a prayer song by the choir, followed by welcome address by Suhan Alva, the student coordinator. Addressing the students, Fr Melwyn Mendonca Sj said, ” Economics is one great subject among other subjects, and if you study economics your knowledge will grow. I am happy to see enthusiastic faces among all the participants here, and the Fest has given you a platform to unleash and enrich your talents. You should also learn soft skills, and developing your skills you’ll be better leaders and better persons. Also, try to make a difference in other peoples lives, be generous and serve the community. Our country can develop only by energetic and dedicated youth like you all. Don’t listen to others, make your own decisions, and aim for success”.
Actor Arjun Kapikad addressing the audience said, “Coming here brings back sweet memories of my college days at my Alma Mater. During our college days, it was hard to bunk classes, but the only way we could skip boring classes was by participating in various competitions and Fests- and I was always ready for it, and having taken part in many competitions, I have also won many prizes. Like they say you should not look to win, but always come forward to take part. Participation is just like winning. You all have great talents, make use of them when opportunity strikes. Finally, I humbly request you all to support the Tulu film industry, and also my forthcoming Tulu film which is still in shooting. I feel humble to be here at an institution which made me what I am now. Long live St Aloysius College, one of the great institution in the Country”.

The name “Econovanza” is a new name for myself. It is also a fanciful name for young students of St. Aloysius College to appreciate that the 139 year old focus on Economics has successfully produced thousands of students to groom themselves and molded themselves into an Educational discipline that has produced so many students bright in their dedication of planning, budgeting, thinking and acting in order to end up with a successful bottom line in whatever they do. Exhorbitant spending has become a chronic disease with most of the business entrepreneurs where they have diverted a large chunk of their… Read more »
