With ‘World Blood Donor Day 2020’ Theme ‘Safe Blood Saves Lives’ It’ll Be ‘Voluntary Blood Donation Month’ organized by Blood Bank of AJ Hospital and Research Centre; A J Institute of Medical Sciences & Research Centre; and A J Institute of Dental Science -Mangaluru from 14 June till 14 July 2020

Mangaluru : World Blood Donor Day is observed every year on 14th June. The purpose behind why the day is celebrated is to promote blood donation among people. By donating blood, you are not only saving someone else’s life but also keeping your health right. There have been many pieces of research that have revealed that by donating blood, you remain physically and mentally healthy. That is why World Blood Donor Day is celebrated every year on 14 June. So that people get aware of donating blood. Who can donate blood? Any healthy person can easily donate blood after the age of 18 years. The person giving blood should not have diseases like HIV, Hepatitis B, and C etc. Along with that, there should also be sufficient iron in the body before donating blood. Blood donation should be done once every 3 months as it keeps the amount of iron in your body right.

Talking about the theme of this year, it is ‘Safe Blood Saves Lives’ whereas if you talk about the slogan, then it is ‘Give blood and make the world a healthy place.’. The benefits of donating blood are- It helps in controlling weight; It keeps your liver healthy; Keeps cancer away; Helps in smooth blood circulation; Helps in burning calories. Therefore- Be there for someone else. Give blood. Share life! -That’s right! Every year, on 14 June, countries around the world celebrate World Blood Donor Day. It’s true that ‘Service to Humanity is Service to God’; “A single pint of blood can save other’s lives. A single gesture can create a million smiles”. “Service to others is the rent you pay for your room here on earth”- and for that matter, A J Hospital and Research Centre-Mangaluru is all set to organize a ‘Voluntary Blood Donation Month”from 14 June until 14 July 2020, to mark “World Blood Donor Day”.

Speaking to Team Mangalorean, Dr Prashanth Marla-Medical Director-AJ Hospital and Research centre,said, ” Transfusion of blood and blood products helps save millions of lives every year. It can help patients suffering from life-threatening conditions live longer and with a higher quality of life, and supports complex medical and surgical procedures. It also has an essential, life-saving role in maternal and child care and during the emergency response to man-made and natural disasters. A blood service that gives patients access to safe blood and blood products in sufficient quantity is a key component of an effective health system. An adequate supply can only be ensured through regular donations by voluntary, unpaid blood donors. Adequate supply of blood during emergencies requires a well-organized blood service, and this can only be ensured by engaging the entire community and a blood donor population committed to voluntary unpaid blood donation throughout the year. In conclusion, in my perspective-“If you are a blood donor, you are a hero/heroine to someone, somewhere, who received your gracious gift of life.’ All of us know that blood is a base of every human life; there is no life without blood. Blood is our prana, the power of life on earth. How true this saying is. We do not own the sun in the sky, yet more certainly, we can say the sun is ours because it gives and gives. This should be our motivation during the Voluntary Blood Donation Month starting from 14 June till 14 July 2020 at AJ Hospital & Research Centre. The saying goes true, ‘Blood is meant to circulate. Pass it on.’ May be we have done little today to save a life, but surely it will save someone’s life in a greater way tomorrow.”
