Withdraw GST on Student’s Fees – Christan Almeida NSUI Udupi district president

Udupi: NSUI Udupi District demanded to withdraw GST on the student’s fees immediately for making education inclusive and an instrument of social change.

In a press release issued by Christan Almeida NSUI Udupi district president stated that, the ‘State of the urban youth, India 2012: Employment, livelihoods, skills,’ published by IRIS Knowledge Foundation in collaboration with UN-HABITAT, India is set to become the youngest country in 2020, with 64 percent of its population in the working age group. It is needless to reiterate, therefore, the youths are a valuable asset for our country and need the government’s assistance rather than a financial burden.

Under the BJP, the very concept of tax is being turned on its head. The purpose of taxation is to fund the development and welfare obligations of the government. Education is a central responsibility of the government in any conception of the state. However, the Modi government is taxing students education to funnel money towards its warped development priorities. The Modi Government has been privatizing education either outrightly or under the guise of “self –financing” courses.

The imposition of the 18 percent GST on the admission and examination forms for youth is a way to deny education to those coming from economically weaker and backward sections of the Indian society. The imposition of the financial burden, GST has become Gloomy/grotesque for students tax. GST has also been levied on the sports facilities in the places like DDA Sports Complex, which are availed by the common people.

India is a developing country with millions still trying to grapple with the problem of earning a livelihood. In such a scenario, the imposition of this tax is a virtual denial of education to students coming from such socially and economically weaker sections.

NSUI demands to withdraw GST on the student’s fees immediately for making education inclusive and an instrument of social change, he stated.

Retirement age is 60 legally in India, and why is this not practised in the offices of governance in India? If this is overlooked, so should education be tax exempt in every form and shape? I firmly believe it is not the amount of taxes this government is on the path of collection, they should really be in the concept of containing salaries and expenses in all government agencies, that is the real reason for wanting more revenue in the form of GST that has virtually made living in India more expensive and gets life and development even further back.… Read more »
