Wolfsburg striker Gomez rejoins Stuttgart
Berlin, Dec 23 (IANS) Wolfsburg striker Mario Gomez has returned to his former club Stuttgart with immediate effect, both German football clubs have announced.
The Germany international returned to his hometown club where he started his professional career in 2003 as he on Friday put pen to paper on a contract until June 2020, reports Xinhua news agency.
Stuttgart’s head coach Hannes Wolf said in a statement: “I am very delighted about the signing of Mario Gomez. We will do everything in our preparation to integrate him quickly. We are convinced that he can help us to play a successful second half of the campaign.
Gomez played from 2003 until 2009 for the Stuttgart where he lifted the Bundesliga title in 2007. During his six-year spell at Stuttgart, he provided 63 goals in 121 appearances.
“I am very happy to be back home where everything stated for me. Of course, I know that the expectations are high and the situation is very challenging. Still, I can’t wait to play,” Gomez told the club’s official homepage.
The 32-year-old is since 2007 part of Germany’s national team where he scored 31 goals in 71 international caps.
Newly promoted Stuttgart sit currently on the 14th place of the Bundesliga standings. They encounter Hertha Berlin after the winter break on January 13.
