Mangaluru: In a commendable initiative aimed at raising awareness about critical societal issues, the Yenepoya Naturopathy and Yogic Science College and Hospital commemorated World Cancer Day 2025 with a significant program centered around the theme, “The Impact of Substance Abuse on Youth.” The event served as a platform to illuminate the growing concern of substance abuse among the youth and the myriad repercussions this behavior holds for their physical and mental wellness, academic achievement, interpersonal relationships, and future prospects.

The gathering attracted a diverse audience comprising esteemed dignitaries, faculty members, students, and special guests, all united in underscoring the urgent need for awareness, early intervention, and preventative strategies in combatting substance abuse within this vulnerable demographic.

The proceedings commenced with a soulful Invocation rendered by Tufail, a second-year Bachelor of Naturopathy and Yogic Sciences (BNYS) student, who set a contemplative and reflective ambiance for the program. Following this, Mr. Ajith K., Associate Professor at the college, delivered an inspiring Welcome Address wherein he accentuated the significance of addressing substance abuse issues, particularly emphasizing their prevalence among the youth. He passionately urged students to immerse themselves in awareness initiatives that could lead to positive change within their communities.

A prominent highlight of the event was the traditional Lighting of the Lamp Ceremony, which was conducted with the participation of distinguished dignitaries. This age-old ritual symbolizes the dispelling of ignorance through the illumination of knowledge, thereby reinforcing the essential role education plays in navigating and resolving social challenges, particularly those related to substance abuse.

In a thought-provoking Presidential Address, Dr. Puneet Raghavendra K.R., Principal of Yenepoya Naturopathy and Yogic Science College and Hospital, expressed deep concern regarding the alarming increase in substance abuse among students and young professionals. He underscored the pivotal role educational institutions play in fostering a drug-free environment while encouraging healthier lifestyle choices. One of the most anticipated segments of the program was the Guest Talk delivered by Ms. Vidya Hegde, Training Coordinator of the Yuva Spandana Project at the Department of Epidemiology, NIMHANS, Bengaluru. Drawing from her extensive experience in youth development and mental health awareness, Ms. Hegde presented a comprehensive analysis of the detrimental effects of substance abuse on cognitive functions, decision-making capabilities, and social behaviors. She elucidated early signs of addiction, proposed effective intervention strategies, and expounded on the significant roles families and society must play in preventing substance abuse. Her interactive session encouraged students to engage actively, as they posed pertinent questions regarding rehabilitation processes and preventive measures.

Significantly, the event concluded with a heartfelt Vote of Thanks delivered by Dr. Vajrakshi U., Coordinator of the CFSAP at Yenepoya Naturopathy and Yogic Science College and Hospital. She expressed sincere gratitude to all dignitaries, guest speakers, faculty members, and students whose active participation contributed to the event’s success.
