‘Yes Sir, No Sir’ echoed Loud in the Hall during ‘NCC Induction Programme’ Talk on ‘Personality Development by Lt Col Gracian Sequeira’- Admin Officer, 18 Karnataka Battalion NCC Army Wing
Mangaluru : The ‘Aims’ of the NCC laid out in 1988 have stood the test of time and continue to meet the requirements expected of it in the current socio–economic scenario of the country. The NCC aims at developing character, comradeship, discipline, a secular outlook, the spirit of adventure and ideals of selfless service among young citizens. Further, it aims at creating a pool of organized, trained and motivated youth with leadership qualities in all walks of life, who will serve the Nation regardless of which career they choose. Needless to say, the NCC also provides an environment conducive to motivating young Indians to join the armed forces.
The programme began with a prayer song invoking God’s blessing by a group of NCC cadets, followed by welcome address by Ms Premalath shetty, Programme Officer of Youth Red Cross Unit of SAC. The chief guest and resource person of the progtramme was Lt Col Gracian Sequeira- Admin Officer, 18 Karnataka Battalion NCC Army Wing, joined by Lt Shakinraj -Army Wing, S/Lt Hariprasad Shetty- Navy Wing, Flying Officer Alwyn Misquith- Airforce Wing-of SAC, Ms Premalatha Shetty and Arjun Prakash-both Programme Officers of Youth Red Cross Unit of SAC. After a brief introduction of the resource person by the compere Miss Ashika Shetty-Cadet Petty Officer Naval Wing of SAC, it was the moment of the evening where the large audience of NCC Cadets and Youth Red Cross Unit members had to glued to their seats to hear Lt Col Sequeira speech.
The elaborate speech had a bunch of “Yes Sir” and “No Sir” replied back in loud voices from the cadets when the speaker put forth a bunch of queries like- Q : “Are You Awake” A: “Yes Sir”! ; Q: “Are You Sleeping? A: “No Sir”! ; Q: “Are You Day Dreaming”? A: “No Sir”!; Q: Are You alert”? A: “Yes Sir”!; Q: Are You Tired and Bored”? A: “No Sir”! Q : “Are You All Enjoying My Speech”? A : Yes Sir”! Q: You Are Lying, Right”? A : “No Sir”!…these and many more Yes Sir and No Sir echoed the inside of the Hall throughout Lt Col Sequiera’s talk.
Complimenting the SAC NCC Cadets and members of Youth Red Cross Unit for being the BEST group of students that he has met among all other institutions in his area, Lt Col Gracian Sequeira continued by giving a brief introduction on his personal life in the Indian Army serving in Jammu and Kashmir, Srinagar and other locations. He said, “I come from a middle class family, and grew through hardship, determination and courage, to reach this position that I am holding now. We have to make the impossible possible, having trust in God, like I did. Always respect your parents, elders, teachers, relatives, friends and others- when I call my mother the first thing I ask her in Konkani ‘Besanv de Mai’ (Bless Me, Mom). Because you see God in your parents, followed next by your teachers”.
“You should remember that parents are responsible for your growth, and teachers are for your good education, so respect them. Keep away from mobile phones, because they will ruin your lives. Be simple and don’t live a lavish life. During my younger days, I never wore chappals or shoes, until I joined the Army. You need to make your dreams come true, but sometimes they may be in vain, like Abdul Kalam wanted to become a fighter pilot, instead became the President of India. We need to follow in the footsteps of three important persons of India- Saint Mother Teresa, Mahatma Gandhi and Abdul Kalam, for their service and dedication to our nation” added Lt Col Sequeira.
He further said, “As students of this prestigious St Aloysius Institution you are truly blessed to be dedicated and determined NCC Cadets and Youth Red Cross Unit members. Personal development in one’s life is very important, because the process of improving oneself through activities as enhancing employment skills, increasing consciousness and building wealth. Personal development covers activities that improve awareness and identity, develop talents and potential, build human capital and facilitate employability, enhance the quality of life and contribute to the realization of dreams and aspirations. Personal development takes place over the course of a person’s entire life. So keep up the good work that you are all entrsuted with, go forward with spirit of determination, dedication and commitment, and you all will be the fighters and good citizens of India. You were all a great audience, for actively and listening with patience and enthusiasm. Best of luck”.
Lt Col Sequeirs also briefed the cadets about the benefits in joining the NCC, and also showed a 20-minutes documentary on Indian NCC titled “Life In The Army is Truly ‘The Ultimate Experience’. The cadets gave a rousing applaud to Lt Col Gracian sequeira for his inspiring and motivating speech. Lt Sachinraj proposed the vote of thanks.
It is true, NCC mould charecter of an individual and the spirit of love to his mother country and leadership, devotion to his duty and faithful to his neighbours
