  • From Max and Jessie Rasquinha on India can re-emerge as global powerhouse in education: Vice-President

The Educational advancement of India is truly an inspiring fact for the rest of the world to admire and appreciate. In spite of all our weaknesses in many sectors of our daily progress in life, we have a tremendous pride to boast and also a privilege to prove to the rest of the world the amount of success we have gained thru advancement of our Education. The only area that we cannot face the world of anxiety is the fact that in spite of all the rest of the progress, how come we have no eradicated our extreme poverty for the past 70 years of our Independence. This is one single area that we all need to share the guilt and should try and discover where lies the priority to wake up and make things possible. When, where and how this situation of poverty in India that we all can work together and correct our future is something we all have to come forward and mark the date on our calendar and see when can we achieve the desired necessity of our life in India.

Development work in Mangalore is going on in full swing under the leadership of J.R Lobo. Let us give him another term so that the good work can continue in the best interest of all Mangalorean. Just like nuns in Catholic faith, we have Sadhwis in Hindu faith. I am not aware of such a system in Islam and other religions. There are Jain Sanyasins and Bauddha sanyasins. Both these religions are iff shoots of Hinduism. Trust she helps people live a pious life.

Is this Dr Shivanand Patil a fraud or endorsing fraud? On either counts he is likely to face action by the Medical council if they are the true guardians of public interest. Kudos to Nayak maam for his relentless tirade against these types of people. I am also particularly impressed with his watchdog action against blind beliefs which plague the society. • From Max and Jessie Rasquinha on J R Lobo visits Churches, Temples and Mosque Prior to Filing Nomination

Visiting Churches, Temples and Mosques, and joining the flock of different faiths is truly a good symbol of Evangelism for the election candidates to display their faith in God, and also enable them to join various other faiths and place their positive hope in God. In a country such as India, God is our help and support; God is our strength and confidence. The Leadership in secular India where merciful God has to protect the electoral candidates and bless them so that their leadership skills are blessed abundantly and that all that the election candidates aspire in public life is spelled out well to the public, and all their promises and assurances to the people are well honored with the crowning success in the election. Thank you, Mr. J. R. Lobo for your continued determination to serve the people and serve the Nation. May all your hopes and desires be crowned with rising success – more than what you have already displayed during your current.

Did Swami ji say ‘ Vijayee bhava?’ Duryodhana and Yudhishtira go to Lord Krishna seeking support. Duryodhana sits at head end and Yudhishtira at the feet. Lord opens his eyes and sees Yudhishtita first and asks him what he can do for him. Duryodhana gets upset and informs that he came first and should be heard first. Yudhishtira allows that. It is another matter that Duryodhana chose the army over Krishna. Sorake ko kya milnewaala hai?

Good work by the Income Tax Dept., however either this media or the authority in the Raid, does not want to make public the names and photos of these evil Indians and shame them, Neither is there any law involved in convicting them and sending them to jail on black money. Hope all this money and gold confiscated can be utilised for the upliftment of the poor and needy in Karnataka by building homes, elementary schools, and distributing clothing and food and medicine. Otherwise all this ill gotten wealth will never be accounted and as nothing is ever shown in Government accounts where all the year-long cash, gold, and drugs and foreign liquor caught is utilised.

What is Modi effect? By denying its presence, Cong I is actually acknowledging it. Modi will visit Bangalore with 34 seats. Even if he shows his presence in half of them, BJP will win more than 22. BJP will find it tough in Mandya Mysire Hassan Kanakapura Ram Nagar. They should have little problem un Belgaum and surrounding districts. They will manage to win many seats in DK and Udipi except for Udipi proper. Bellary Chitradurga likely to swing BJP way. Shimoga and Chikka Mangalore will favor BJP. I predict 118 seats for BJP. IN 2008 I had predicted 110. They got just that. I predict 25 seats for JDS Cong I will still get 91 as predicted by Times. It is a pity that Yeddy will become CM again. If I had my way he will not be the CM. So who should be the CM? Make one of the winning MLA from Bangalore city the next CM. Yes. That will be Suresh Kumar from Rajaji Nagar. Good luck BJP. Sorry Cong I folks. You guys will lose power. Sorry HDK. You will not be the king maker. No hung assembley but clear verdict will emerge. PS:Siddu will lose bith Chamundeshwari and Badami. Pamma will win Udipi. Vedavyas Kamath will win Mangalore city eventhough Lobo may scrape close. Eeshwarappa will lose from Shimoga. SriRamulu will lose Molakalmur but will wun Badami. Ashok Kheni will lose from Bidar. I am waiting on announcement from Nayak maam who is allergic to forecasts.

What about congested roads, What about pollution? What about garbage? What about cost of living? Cong I will win 91 seats as per Times. Is this one of them? Except Pamma in Udipi other candidates are all border line. It could swing back and forth and victory margins may be few hundreds. Shiroor Swamy may get 500 votes. R Bhatta may get about 1 lakh. • From Richard Thomas on Protesting with the Message 'Hang The Rapists', Dakke/Fruit/Veg/Fish/Meat Markets Closed in City

It appears that on the pressure from the IMF Chief, the Center in India is considering the death penalty for raping children. Due to the number of rapes and murders, especially in the UP, Bihar, and the North areas, the POSCO Act was introduced, but it appears that truly did not deter criminals from committing such henious acts against children and women in India. Litigation and Judicial laws must change to see any change in India in this respect, and as well in the areas of corruption and cheating.

Drona saar, this is purely a election gimmick. Among Catholics touching feet is a sign of asking for forgiveness… as in, if the drunkard son, creates ruckus in the house the previous night, the next day he usually falls on his mother’s feet as a sign of repentance. It’s a different matter though that the cycle repeats come next evening. Not really sure what Lobo maam is up to here.

Dear Alfie, thank you so much for this really timely and requisite article. It is getting more and more impossible to drive in Mangalore owing to the lack of knowledge, adherence, disobedience about road rules, and then the absence of punishment for rule breaking as well. Would like to add two more problems – people driving the OPPOSITE way on one-way streets and lanes; and jaywalkers who jump in front of vehicles to cross, just showing up their palms for the (running) vehicles to stop! Two wheelers, autos and private buses – the less said about the way they “drive,” the better!

  • From Prof. George Menachery on Veteran Journalist T V R Shenoy Passes Away

It gives a heartache to read about the death of the doyen of journalists T. V. R. Shenoy. He had such a correct judgement of what is to be printed and what is not to be printed. When I was sending reports for Manorama from Rome during the election of Saint John Paul papal election in 1978 he used to send the relevant portions to all the editions of Manorama to be translated and published just a few hours after their despatch from Rome by teleprinter. But when I sent the report of the actual election itself the teleprinter reports were rejected by him time and again ( thus saving me a lot of hard cash difficult for an Indian journalist to come by) because the election news itself was available ( unlike the materias, of my previous reports) on all agencies like Reueters, PTI, AFP etc. and also on every international channel. When the teleprinter machine rejected my reports a number of times on that night in October 1978 I felt a little offended until things were clarified to me by Shenoy after my return to India. His acumen and finesse has rarely been equalled by other journalists of the country. I ALSO REMEMBER HOW HE PUBLISHED A LONG ARTICLE IN THE WEEK ABOUT THE ART AND ARCHITECTURE OF kERALA TEMPLES AND CHURCHES AT A TIME WHEN NOT MANY WERE TAKING INTEREST IN SUCH THINGS. May his brave soul RIP. -Prof. George Menachery

  • From Richard Thomas on Beware! Incredible Shrinking Circles near Nanthoor and KPT Junctions?

Roundabouts, as they are correctly referred to in English, are a British invention, when motor cars were new and few during the Royal times. Prior to motor vehicles, there were only Horse Carriages and Bullock Carts and Hand Carts in India. Today, there are more buses, trucks, cars, and motorcycles that the roads can accommodate, and these Roundabouts are very hazardous where the driving mentality of Indians is very impatient and bad to the extent of drunk driving and road rage. Although the media in Mangalore and Karnataka claim Mangalore being a SMART CITY and Education Hub, etc., it is not true in the case of installation and proper functioning of Traffic Lights. The people who pay so much taxes in Driver’s Licence, Purchase of new vehicles and Transfer of Pre-used vehicles, Registration, etc. must wake up and demand from the Regional Karnataka Transport Dept., why they are so lethargic and irresponsible in ensuring that Traffic Lights work all the time. When there are power cuts, that unfortunately and strangely applies to Streetlights and Traffic Lights, there should be Battery Back-up, so that they are operational at all times. No use of constantly only complaining and writing big long articles. If there are Traffic Laws, there should also be laws for those in the Transport Dept. to comply with or face federal consequences.

  • From Richard Thomas on 8-year-old Girl Gang Rape and Murder, NSUI Holds Candle Light Vigil

The Prime Minister is not responsible for crimes committed by Hindus and that too in a temple! Nor is BJP party responsible. The Law will find the culprits, and pray they be hanged in public so that other criminals may learn of consequences. It’s sad that certain Indian nationals can stoop down to rape and murder, not even sparing children. God’s wrath will certainly befall on the culprits and their generation.

This subject is being highlighted in this media time and again. It is obvious that these Kannadigas instead of living everyday that God blesses them with in love, peace, and harmony, have nothing better to battle about than on whose name a road of no real significance should be named after. It would have served better if they would devote their time, money, and energy in adapting this road and to maintain it’s upkeep, that is so needed in Mangalore, and leave the naming or numbering of a certain length of public road to the Municipality of Mangalore. My bet is if one stops a 100 motorists and inquire the name of this road, most would not know it – as in Mangalore and Udupi there are no road names or road signs, and if any, they are not visibly displayed.

Congratulations! Great detection and policing work by the team of DCIB. Anti-social criminals from UP, Bihar, Rajasthan, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, Nepal, Bangladesh both male and female are coming to Karnataka State to cheat, steal, and kill under the guise of labourers or skilled building workers. They must be kept in check, contained, and stopped, India should come up with one unforgeable National Identity card for all it’s identified citizens that must be carried by all Indians at all times, especially whilst travelling from State to State and to be produced at banks, post offices, and other federal offices. All other meaningless cards such as Aadhar Card, Ration Card, PAN Card, and Drivers’ Licence, are all easily forged and even Bangladeshis and Pakistanis have obtained them unscrupulously in convinace with those in authority. All anti-social elements whether political or criminal must be kept in check by keeping a good tag on them when they enter Karnataka State by flight, train, bus, car, or motorbike – something like Immigration Control but on a local level – in this manner it will be easy to do a background check on them to find out if they are criminals or not. So that they can be deported to their own States or Countries to serve their prison term as free boarding and lodging on State’s cost cannot contain and eliminate crime and criminals. All Indian States must follow this system to ensure less crime and criminals.

Does it really mean anything when those who were in authority and those who are in authority hate each other and their parties, and are demoralizing and demeaning each other on a daily basis that one can read in this media Mangalore.com and Deccan Herald. These students should first read all what is taking place now that the elections are on and come to their own beliefs and conclusions. For example in Mangalore, Ramakrishna Mission volunteers dedicate their time and energy to keep the city clean – who does this in Udupi? In Udupi, the students should only look for a BETTER UDUPI so that there will be cleaner surroundings, water, electricity, proper pavements, and better roads and security and police presence at all times, and ensure those in authority will work for the betterment of the town.

You think the MCC officials can operate independently without political pressure and influence from ruling party? How many cleanliness drives have been organized by local MLAs? Unless the mentality of Indians change, dirt, litter, and dumping will not end. In this instance, the Mangalore Municipality must arrange to place large garbage bins or the Contractor Anthony Waste Management to enable those dumping to dump in the garbage bins. In the meantime, the Rama Krishna mission should rope up some volunteers of the Airport Area Bajpe, and conduct a cleanliness drive. And the PM should compensate all the volunteers in cash or kind for their time and labour from the large loan he has taken from the World Bank for this purpose. • From Michele Westfall on Mangaluru: Karnataka to be Deaf Free State - Minister U T Khader

Three thoughts in relation to this article and their plan: 1) While it’s important to identify Deaf children as early as possible, simply identifying them will not cause the area to become a “Deaf-free state.” 2) Cochlear implants are not a cure. Additionally, they do not instantly turn the Deaf child into a hearing person…in other words, what the Deaf person gets through cochlear implants will not be equal to what hearing people hear. It’s not even close. 3) Most importantly, using terms “deaf mute” and “deaf and dumb” are both offensive to Deaf people, and people in India need to stop using these terms, as both are outdated and offensive. Additionally, aiming for a “Deaf-free state” is also very offensive and is akin to genocide. Being Deaf is not the same as being ill–it’s not a health condition. The best way to raise and educate Deaf children is to provide them with early access to Indian Sign Language (ISL) and make sure they become fluent in ISL. Fluency in ISL will ensure that they will transfer their linguistic knowledge to learning to read and write other languages. By the way, I’m Deaf and I don’t wear cochlear implant. I speak American Sign Language fluently and write English fluently.

It is truly hard to define the authority and duty of a Police personnel in India. Mostly, the Police personnel are used by political parties or protesting parties – where their presence is seen and felt. On any given day in the town of Mangalore or Udupi, one would rarely see a police man or a police woman otherwise. Traffic Police are the police seen at junctions and at some intersections. But should one point out to the Police man or the Traffic Police man on the bad state of roads or pot holes or lack of traffic lights on inter- sections or on junctions – the police do not take any action. So what is the authority and duty of a police man or a Traffic police man or woman.

Serving God and serving the Community is Love, and with love comes harmony, peace, and well being. Similarly, Specialist Doctors of various disciplines of medicine should also give back and reach out on a weekly basis to the poor and needy of their town and neighbourhood. A medicine and general nutrition drive also would help – so that people can donate general medicine such as toothpaste, toothbrush, mouthwash. bath soap, sanitary pads, pampers for babies, cold and cough syrups, health tablets and tonics, etc, People also should conduct food and clothes drives in Churches, Temples, and Mosques, where people can donate lentils, rice, sugar, wheat flour, rice flour, canned soups, mixed vegetables, fruits, etc, Used and good items of clothing for babies, girls and boys and shoes. books and toys for the poor and needy children and women, that can be distributed on a weekly basis in a Church hall or a Mosque Hall, to the poor and needy residents of that town or neighbourhood, on the basis of documenting the people to ensure that only genuine of the area are benefitting. People now must also take over governance of roadside vendors and create a system to alleviate their honesty in earning their daily bread, by documenting them, and allocating them areas where they can vend and also ensure hygiene and cleanliness especially if they are vending food.

Congratulations to Ms. Aneesha Nayak on her outstanding research work in Biology. She has indeed made her family, her Institution, her state Karnataka, and her country India proud. Yes, sadly government funds do not come easily to those gifted with talents and skills because in India, everything requires politics – someday, Aneesha too will be given an MP recognition, and funds will flow automatically from the government.

  • From Richard Thomas on Hypertension and Its Effects on Your Body

Hypertension can be contained if one processes life and people and everything in-between in an acceptable and calm manner, Nobody really knows why what we call disease strikes our God made bodies. Research and Science and Doctors and Specialists are limited to their tall claims based on what they encounter and study. Same people also claim smoking causes cancer, and whereas little children too die of cancer! In my opinion, our lifestyle matters most in containing any disease, and it has nothing to do with eating healthy or poor nourishment, whether one goes to the gym or not. Hypertension is directly related to how we process our daily thoughts, needs, and challenges. If we need good education, we worry about big funds, if we have good education, we worry about a good job, if we have good jobs, we struggle with life’s challenges especially in India, with poor hygiene, poor amenities,, poor infrastructure, poor law and order, poor governance, and so on – it is these things that actually cause tension – what Researchers call Hyper Tension. If we stay calm and relaxed and accept how things generally are in India, we can process our mindset better, our body processes everything in a better manner. The older generation had less problems and stress and better health and less disease because they lived simple and enjoyed nature. Today no one has time for nature – it’s all about work, business, or money! Today, men go bald at age 25 and die at age 45

It was a pride to read that five eminent Alumnis of St. Aloysius College were officially recognized in Mangalore recently in the presence of a large congregation. Occasions such as these are not only valuable for the recipients but also for the new students so that they realize that sooner or later their time will also appear before them, and they too will be recognized in one form or another. As it was rightly pointed out, once you are an Aloysian, regardless how many years endured and what all Educational disciplines that you earned, you will always be branded as an esteemed Aloysian. Each and everyone of us therefore have a legitimate responsibility to give back to our Alma Mater in whichever way possible. St. Aloysius is a reputable Institution that has earned all the reputation in and around Mangalore for nearly two centuries, and the Jesuits have established the Institution with the help of so many Missionaries as well as the students and many other Mangaloreans in order to make the Institution survive from year to year and grow from stage to stage. Thank you, St. Aloysius, for all your dedication to the past and present students of St. Aloysius. May you be blessed ten fold in all your future contributions in and around Mangalore.

sorry – I don’t buy this ‘stunt’. Why don’t they come up with something original to India than blindly following what White man tell us to do? Turning off lights for an hour makes sense in a society where electricity is abundant and people waste energy by irresponsible behavior. On the other hand, India still struggles to find 24 hrs energy supply to citizens. People in western world use 3 – 4 times more energy than a typical indian on daily basis. If you care about earth and pollution, how about volunteering to keep your surrounding clean under ‘swachcha bhaaratha’ campaign? Or even better, have a ‘vegan’ day as meat consumption directly contributes climate change. Do something meaningful.

I was lucky to hear Radi Saab live at Bangalore in 1978. I also have heard Kishore Kumar live. No one can really match such huge talent. Kumar Sanu sounds so ordinary when compared to Kishore. Again Sonu Nigam is just an imitation of Radi but not as melodious. If you like to hear variations in a song, listen to ‘aisa na go ke inn waadiyon mein, by Rafi from the movie Aakhri Dao. Actually, Mr. T.J. Abraham should file a complaint against Syndicate Bank, if he believes that banks should not lend above and beyond the mortgage value and that the authority RBI should investigate take appropriate action. That should rest the issue. If Mr Pramod Madhwaraj has been granted a loan above and beyond the mortgage value of the land, one does not see the problem that did affect Mr T.J. Abraham. Did Syndicate Bank deny him a similar loan? Of late, so many public and private sector banks are lodging complaints that are actually their misdeeds in lending against norm and banking principles and the law, and are only now asking the authorities to do something.

If studying for exams is considered as stress and burden, then may god help them to face the challenges life throws at them later on. They will have to juggle the pressure on many fronts – work, family, children, health, responsibility etc. Compared to that this is nothing. For students the only worry these days is to switch off their smart phone, sit down and study. Food and accommodation and other needs are fulfilled by parents anyway. So please do not try to make an issue where none exists. And stop cosseting them. That will only take away their confidence. Teach them to be independent. Human beings have survival skills built into their genes. So, throw them in cold water, they will learn to swim in no time. And they will thank you for doing it some day.

  • From Valquirio de M. Barbalho on Renovating Our Churches? Quite the Reverse!

Just took notice that nowadays is a genealogist in India who probably could be some sort of cousin of mine. I come from Barbalho Family who have two representative in India: Luis Barbalho Bezerra, who went India around 1530 and Fernão Barbalho Bezerra, probably great or grand-nephew of Luis, who went India around 1680. Recently a discover a lineage in my family which had the last name Lobo. Was an important branch of the most noble Portuguese families. Even descendant of King Pedro I and all the Portuguese kings before him. One of these branch was Baltazar Lobo de Souza. He was first married to Joana Barbosa (maybe other name) and had at least 4 children. Three female and a male. The male, Henrique Lobo, was married e had one daughter in Portugal and died. So the three sister and a nice went to Brazil, at the old capital Salvador City. Them they were married to people from the most noble Portuguese Families in Brazil and now the are ancestors of a good part of Brazilians. Baltazar Logo married a second time and went to India. There we now know he had more 10 children. But we don’t know where they went after around 1567, when Baltazar died in Goa. At the time, Baltazar had other brothers living in India too. This is why I think we are related to a good part of people from India today. Unfortunately, the problem of not understanding the importance of conservation of historical places is not unique to India. In Brazil the problem is mostly the same. Common people don’t understand that it is a great opportunity to see the links beyond their own circle of life. And in case of tourism, it a enormous opportunity to do business. My genealogical studies are published in my blog: https://val51mabar.wordpress.com/. Unfortunately for those who don’t know how to read in Portuguese I don’t translated the genealogical texts to English. It is too much for me because I do the research without sponsorship. Congratulations to Dr. Michael Lobo to his good work. Sincerely, Valquirio de M. Barbalho.

It is gratifying to witness such a large congregation of young students prevailing in Bahrain and that is a good evidence to realize the size of Karnataka communities that exist in a small Kingdom. Having children at the workplace in the Gulf countries is the best advantage Indian parents can enjoy so that the parents can give their very best to their employers and create a mutual benefit for all. Children of Indian origin growing in the Gulf region have a multiple advantage. Not only the parents can witness their children growth in their very presence, but also many of the prospective students can always plan their further Academic education abroad with a greater support and confidence. Having children in the Gulf makes the working environment much easier and more comfortable. We had our own two sons born and raised in Saudi Arabia, and we knew some of the best advantages of having them in our very presence and witness their growth and welfare.

He may dissolve the parliament before term and seek a fresh mandate. Likely after the monsoons may be around Diwali time. He won’t need allies when he can manage a straight simple majority. If BJP emerges as the single largest party, Arun Jaitley is likely to be the BJP candidate for the PM post. On the other hand, as he may have difficulty in winning the seat, Nitin Gadkari may be the surprise choice. As far as the Cong I is concerned, they can live in a fool’s paradise. They won’t cross 60 seats in any case. Didi and Naidu will try to upstage each other and Naisu will end up bowing off. Left and Didi do not tolerate each other. Neither do YSR and TDP. It is doubtful that SP will hold on to BSP. Only other strong party is BJD in Orissa. All these together can just hope. So don’t be surprised if Pappu gets pregerren e over Naidu and Didi. Poor Police Dept. – Phone-in Program is a good way to interact with them – but then one can see why there is no similar program with the Mangalore Municipality or the Public Works Dept, or with the Minister-In-Charge, who are the actual authority to oversee and build or maintain on a regular basis all the bad roads drainage, and pavement and as well to foresee parking or roadside vendors. People must first be the CHANGE to see the CHANGE, and only they can solve the appalling situations or conditions that people in general, complain of in Mangalore or in India. Unimaginable taxes are collected as revenue in sales of all vehicles and apartments and shops – and one can only wonder what is ailing India in general – is it Funds or is it proper utilisation. India is the largest importer of arms and ammunition in the world. Our PM is the most travelled man in the world. One can read all these headlines – so how come people in India do not have good roads, drainage, pavements and other amenities and facilities.

Actor Prakash Rai has substance in his opinion and view of India and it’s version of Democracy. Sadly, the general public is far too timid and naive in not questioning or in agreeing to every decision the state or the central government implements, without people’s agreement or benefit, such as Demonetisation – whom did it benefit? Only the working middle class people were at the mercy of their own banks, having to stand for hours to exchange the old notes for new ones with limits that did not suit anyone’s expenses or budgets, and at the central government dictating every week how much money they could withdraw and how much money one could spend! Aadhar Card – How does it benefit – in fact our PM is asking everyone to give up subsidies for which Aadhar Card was originally implemented. Was not the country functioning well before the Aadhar Card? Public Banks and businessmen scandals and lowering of interest rates to contain their crime and loss.

Imagine a situation where ‘journalists’ intentionally ignore potential ISIS influence on local youth but lecture everyone on noise pollution due to Deepavali. Imagine a situation where ‘journalists’ shamelessly protect a local politician while blaming MCC officials. Sounds familiar? As I have said many times on this forum, in a third-world country, everything tends to follow the third-world standards. Be it justice system or journalism.

It’s truly great that the citizens of Mangalore are participating in the cleanliness and renovation drive of their towns and roads. The Mangalore Municipality should honour and compensate all those who are involved in the several cleanliness drives carried out till date, with their own expenses on time, travel, and material and machinery required to carry out the cleanliness and renovation drives.

  • From Max and Jessie Rasquinha on St Aloysius College Celebrates 'Annual College Day 2018'

Out of so many virtuous memories and sentiments that I possess about my beloved St. Aloysius College, the most valuable lesson that I deeply cultivated in myself was the spirit of patriotism as well as the spirit of Secularism. St. Aloysius was a hundred percent Christian Institute of Education but the Jesuits taught us the value of being patriotic to the country that we proudly belonged, and the dedication we owed to the newly liberated Nation from the British colonialism. Next thing was the beauty of secularism. We had so many teachers and students who were non-Christians yet we happily survived and prospered as a family of one religion, and we all survived as an united family of one faith. While the Catholics obediently went to our beautiful Chapel for our devotion and prayer, we witnessed the Hindus and Moslems went to their respective class rooms for their own religious affiliation. Majority of the bright students during my time were the Hindus and Moslems, and we were indeed proud of them and adored them. I have continuously visited the Beeri complex of St. Aloysius College for MBA, and have always keenly visited the Chapel where we can vividly see a corner for other faiths in addition to the Christian faith within the four walls of serenity and faith. All of the above features are truly impressive and praiseworthy, and we are grateful to St. Aloysius for transplanting the value of secularism from the very inception of our Educational involvement at the Jesuit Institute.

Yes, ignore all derogatory comments and remarks made by any person or party, as no one has control over one’s mind – sick or sane. The people of Karnataka must understand and be understood that obviously there will be jealousy and hatred when those that are in power cannot withstand the unity and progress the people of Karnataka have made, and therefore want to see them divided, so that in Unity they may not stand, and as divided, they may fall! Sometimes, one cannot understand Hinduism and Hindustan, and why is there so much hatred and division and corruption.

Yes, citizens of Karnataka, both boys and girls, men and women, must be encouraged to be agile, fit, and athletic, and to make use of Sports complexes and Stadiums, such as the one Udupi town that has a track, swimming, and gymnasium facilities, in field games such as soccer, hockey, volleyball, basketball, tennis, badminton, and cricket, and as well participate in town, state, inter-states, and other professional level meets in India and in other Asian and South East Asian and European countries. Indians have good climatic conditions to train, and as well as good food available priced moderately, and also have good facilities to train and develop. Encouragement, motivation, and rewards for sportsmanship should be carried out by all societies. The Winter Olympics just got over, and India was not a participant, however, Pakistan and China participated.

  • From Richard Thomas on Don't be too confident, Sonia tells Karnataka Congress

The real Congress President, Sonia Gandhi is advising Karnataka Congress party people WE HAVE TO DO OUR BEST TO RETURN TO POWER! These two parties, the Congress and the BJP are only after their personal interest and TO BE IN POWER! What does that literally mean? Why should the people of Karnataka give any party POWER over their lives and their State? After all, Sonia or Rajiv Gandhi or Amit Shah are certainly not from Karnataka, and are only now pouncing on Karnataka, where are they when there is an acute water shortage, acute power shortage, lack of rain and acute shortage of fruits and vegetables. The people in any party are voted/elected to WORK FOR THE BETTERMENT in the interests of all people of Karnataka, whether or not they favour and vote for either or neither of the parties. This year onward the people of Karnataka should study just exactly what is on the table in the interest of the people lives and for the betterment of development of the State in general, and what are the plans laid out by the elected party, and when and if those plans are ever implemented and who holds the keys to see such development. If no progress is witnessed as laid out and planned, the elected party should be replaced for inefficiency, and the people must not wait for 4-1/2 years for implementation of plans just a few months prior to the next election, as is being carried out right now by the party that was voted in the interests of the people by the people. After all, people in Karnataka should only hope for a better village, town, or a city with professional grade public works and international standard of life, with ample food, water, and electricity, with good roads, good pavements, good bus shelters, car parking lots, with good security and law and order, with ample opportunities for all those youth for jobs and income for a better life. A PARTY THAT WILL WORK IN THEIR INTERESTS ONLY SHOULD BE THEIR PRIMARY CONCERN

God bless all those who invest their time and effort in the seeking the betterment of their people and their villages, towns, cities, and their surroundings, with their Awareness Campaign, which is aptly right. People must stop spitting, littering, and urinating in the streets – and a survey will conclude that only MEN are behind all the miseries of the society in general. They purchase ghutka and litter the packs and spit it out when done, they purchase beedis or cigarettes and throw the butts around, they urinate in street corners, and only they rape and murder! So in general, MEN must be made more aware of the nuisance they are to Society in general. Their awareness can only bring about a true change.

  • From Richard Thomas on People Who Went 'HUNGRY' to 'Indira Canteen' had to Return Back 'HUNGRY?'

There is nothing surprising if an item of food is no longer available – irrespective of a time established by the Restaurant – this happens even in the largest, and the best of Restaurants. Besides, Indira Canteens should cater only to the poor and hungry, and not to Masons, Vegetable Vendors, etc., who earn more than a clerk in a bank, Good and cheap food should be made available to the poor, to the homeless, to the beggars, the jobless, and to the people of that area only – and not truck drivers and taxi drivers, etc. This concept of Indira Canteen will never work, not unless some parameters are taken into study and consideration. In the USA Food Banks are open for the poor and hungry where around US$.150,- worth of fresh, packaged, canned, chilled, frozen, ready to eat, and baked products and produce and milk and cheese is freely given three times a month, and the criteria is one should either be a poor senior citizen, or disabled citizen, or out of work, and/or whose monthly income is below US$.2500.- and must be a resident of that area and community or zip code. All businesses such as WalMart to COSTCO, to large Dairies, to Pizza Hut, to Bakeries to Florists, to Churches and people of the community, donate generously in cash or kind regularly out of love for it’s less fortunate community members. It’s the people and not the US government that establishes such Food Banks. Just because the elections have drawn near the Congress party has hurriedly set up Indira Canteens without proper study or any experience. it’s purely politics!

Best Wishes to you, Mr. Ozzie Sequeira, on your 75th Birthday. We still remember you on your maiden attempt in the movie acting in “Mogh and Mypass” which was indeed a bold attempt on the part of so many to come forward and create a maiden Konkany movie. Wilfie Rebimbos’s musical achievement is still remembered, and so also the maiden effort of Capt. Merwyn Pinto who single handedly financed the project and made it a success. We still remember, when we once went on our vacation to India, we craved the desire to see the movie “Mogh and Maypass”, and Capt. Merwyn Pinto arranged to screen the movie for us by chartering the entire “Roopavani” theater to release the two hour movie exclusively for a group of twenty family members. We sat like “Maharajas” in the spacious theater and watched the movie in style. At the end of the program we all sat together and analysed the pros and cons of the movie and advised Capt. Merwn Pinto to plan the movie production well so as to make it into a profitable and beneficial project. All in all, it was a good and worthwhile maiden project and we were all proud that Capt. Merwyn Pinto’s maiden attempt was a success.

Mr Alfie has a great sense of ethics and responsibility, but is living in a wrong city – and a wrong country, and highlighting important civic issues locally, is like pouring water on a Ducks’ back! Most people walk in India ,but the people in authority make no effort to provide good quality pavements and a good closed drainage system when new roads are constructed or old roads are being widened or concretized, These projects are tendered separately for reasons best known to them and the quality of the existing pavements and drainage is proof of why flooding takes place every monsoon – Sadly, down in India, everything is politically governed – politicians do not walk – they just whiz by in cars that have roads cleared of all traffic and with the police escort so they really do not see anything but themselves and their parties.

Mangalore has always remained grateful to the Jesuits for the quality of Education that six Jesuit Missionaries brought to Mangalore more than a century ago and spread their influence on so many Humanitarian and Educational values that have strongly been entrenched in our entire society. St. Aloysius College is indeed founded in a most important site in Mangalore where thousands of students from all religious backgrounds and cultural backgrounds have prospered so well and have given back abundance of their wealth and expertize to the Community and also the Country. Then came the Fr. Muller’s Hospital at Kankanady, and thereafter the Seminary and the Workshop at Jeppoo. These are all important landmarks of Mangalore where the Missionaries have left behind a strong legacy of dedication of Charity and Integrity for the benefit of the entire region. Welcome to Mangalore, once again, and wish you a comfortable and educative trip to our beloved home town.
