  • From Richard Thomas on Parents will be Booked if Minors found Driving Vehicles – SP Sanjeev Patil

The Phone-in initiative program will certainly garner lots of grievances and complaints from residents and citizens of Udupi District, that the District Superintendent of Police, Dr. Sanjeev Patil IPS will find difficult to act upon and fulfill, based on the nature and the amount of complaints pouring in. Moreover, the change should come from the people of UdupI and those in authority given the responsibility to make life better for it’s residents, and not from Law and Order personnel. The very fact that despite of complaints being received and action having been taken by the Udupi Police Dept., shrill horns are still being used and bus tickets are still not being issued to the people riding the bus, by the local private bus operators. Bike riders are still riding without safety helmets, still keeping small kids on the fuel tank, and riding 3 and 4! So what is ailing the people of Udupi? Being a responsible and caring resident and citizen first,

  • From Richard Thomas on Potholes becoming Death traps in Udupi

Finally, an article is written on potholes on main roads in Udupi – otherwise, it is always Mangalore or Bangalore! The Udupi Municipality and the MPW personnel are certainly aware of all the bad roads and all the potholes – as they too travel to their respective offices by road. Take, for example, the state of the roads in Manipal and the Bus Station. But nobody took any initiative in spite of highlighting the same by swimming and rolling in the potholes by one sing person who wanted to draw the attention of those in authority not carrying out their responsibility. All main roads in and around Udupi should actually be concretised with the edges tapered to drain the water so that it does not gather on the concrete, as one can notice on so many badly and poorly executed concretised main roads and bi-lanes in Udupi. The Municipality Engineering Dept. should check the quality of work executed once completed by their Contractor/s – by emptying water to check it gathers or drains out – but this is certainly not carried out – and those bi-lanes which are supposed to be a convenience to the users in place of mud roads, are truly not serving the purpose – at least the mud roads absorb the rainwater! Well, Udupi CMC and MPW certainly require educated and experienced Engineers and Superiors in road works and infrastructure based on local conditions and rainfall and the drainage required, who will be pro-active and responsible and not wait for such and other articles to draw their attention.

Kudos to Alfie for bringing this issue to lime light. Prevention is always better than cure. Well done PTA of Mount Carmel for thinking on this line. Hope Mayor will also realise this and just do not go on supporting the illegal garage. It is sad to know that Children’s safety is not the priority of the 1st citizen of Mangaluru, who otherwise raids so many shops etc… Why is this attitude from this daring lady? Really questionable??? Hope corporation authorities realise their responsibilities and shift this petty garage and safeguard the children from any mishaps.

Rightly expressed by Neville. A preemptive measures should be taken especially near schools & colleges. Such illegal set ups can cause a greater fallout of events. The civic body should take the right measures to evict possible offenders if not more will add up . Mangalore being an educational hub, needs to indeed prioritize security & safety of all students coming to the state .

It’s amazing how far our media and govt officials are willing to go to hide truth from public. If we see the names, one can easily draw some conclusions. However, our media and govt officials don’t want the truth to be seen. This will help them push the false narrative of ‘smuggling has no religion’ to public. How shameless.

He is enjoying greater peace and content in life than many rich people eating there. Aimie Carmachael who was burred in Donavoor, Tamil Nadu, landed there from England to give a better life for the Devadasi and rejected women of the Hindu society, especially the Dalits. What she said was ” you can give a person without loving but you can’t love a person without giving”. Sri. Arun Shetty loves the suffering world; thus making self sacrifice through giving. This is the only way to eradicate the hunger problem of the world. The Politicians will be increasing their salary, blowing the tax payers money for their pleasure. The religious world instead of taking care of the suffering hungry masses of the world, they are in competition for celebrations and adding high rise buildings. Hearty Congratulations for a good Samaritan. May GOD bless him with health-wealth and long life. Such goods news will give the readers a spiritual uplift.

  • From Richard Thomas on Sorake performs Guddali Puja for developmental work worth Rs 8.51 crore

Good to note that Mr. Vinay Kumar Sorake has declared his intention of developing infrastructure for Kaup, now being his constituency and also an MLA. While he was Udupi District In-Charge, people were very hopeful for some basic improvements – but he was prematurely removed from his post and replaced by Mr Pramod Madhwaraj. for example, the main road that houses the Circuit House and the Office of Urban Development of Udupi District, The Udupi District Police HQ, and the Taluk Office now, has been just left out like a bi-lane with no foot-path for the numerous people working for the Taluk Office and other Govt. offices situated there, as well as for the people who have to visit these offices to obtain Ration Card, Aadhar Card, Marriage Certificates, etc. The most trying period is during the monsoon season – when it becomes impossible to walk in the mud path and being exposed to the hazardous with the road full of potholes. Things should be more regulated in India, rather than dependent on Politicians for basic infrastructure and amenities. There are Ministry of Public Works, The Municipality, Ministry of Electricity & Water, which have to be pushed or instructed by Politicians to act to do get their job done. Like the CM of Karnataka now putting out a demand that all main road potholes in Bangalore to be repaired within 15 days! Then there is the question of funds, that are promised but seldom delivered, or if delivered, siphoned elsewhere, and then begins the same old cycle – scams and the Politicians being involved. The favoured Contractors often complain that they are not paid by the government to carry out the contracted jobs. This should never be the case – as then it becomes a party and politician dictate! That again becomes voting criteria and the related period when the 2 main political parties give big talks of doing this and doing that, and giving this and giving that, etc.

  • From Richard Thomas on Reckless driving kills one in Uttarahalli

Accidents do happen even in the most motor cultured countries in the world. BUT, with a little thought and care, things can be different. The people who drive a motor vehicle, be it a motorcycle, car, truck, bus, or a tipper lorry in the whole of Karnataka and in India in general, after reading and learning about most causes of accidents and death statistics, should learn to drive carefully at all times, inside set speed limits, and to keep at least one car distance between them and the vehicle in front, and in hazardous conditions during rainy season, when most tar roads develop large holes that are normally not attended by the authorities, extra care should be exercised for sudden slow downs or stops of the vehicle in front of them, as one tries to manovure and drive ahead. In this manner, many an accident and life could be saved. Also, heavy vehicles and public buses must drive to the left lane only- in order for cars and motorcycles to move smoothly in the fast lane to the right.

Our dear Alfie highlights this and many other related subjects of roads, drainage, banners, vendors, illegal shops, and the list can go = and the people in authority do nothing about it or at times really attend to it! BUT the problem never seems to improve or attended to once and for all. Yes, in India, the people in authority in any governance are not subject educated or experienced – one cannot expect a barber to be a good tailor if he or she is given the post. It’s a matter of a party and their chosen few who are given the jobs as authority – although their professional governance might suck. No one can change this in India – All are subject to sub-standard policies and practices and politicians. The Defence Minister is made to quit and return to Goa and once again become the Chief Minister, and the Finance Minister becomes the interim Defence Minister, and so on – so what can one expect. The key to success is to separate rightful provisions and amenities from the Politicians. The MPW and the Municipality as well as a person Incharge of an area or a District must be appointed only on credentials and several years of relevant experience – and should not ask permission or funds allocation from the PM or CM as these guys never walk or see things – they just take credit in photo shoots by the same media that highlights such problems.

Dear Brother Alfie, Telling the MCC regarding any road problem to get it solved is like Dog chasing the tail to catch it. Corporators along with some Stupid Engineers are running the show. These People along with Rogue Contractors are robbing the Public. And then there are also others… Every day they travel in their Luxury Cars with iPad on the lap without the feeling of rough roads, because their eyes are on iPad Screen watching? MCC Officials do not care as long as Contractor fills their Pocket. Here is an example: I have contacted MCC 24 times regarding a damaged Chamber near Arya Samaj -Kadri road junction (near Biryani Paradise). I met Mayor 2 times and on Phone 3 times. When I met last time She spoke to an Engineer and gave the Phone to me to explain to him the problem. He promised to take care of it the very next day and now 2 and half months have passed. One a fine morning, I got a call from another Engineer telling me that He will visit the spot and take care of the problem. ALREADY MORE THAN ONE MONTH HAS PASSED AND STILL HE DID NOT FIND THE SPOT TO REPAIR. The best solution is to file a Court Case of Negligence through Civic Organization.

  • From Confused Desi on Be Saudi-Hire Saudi! Saudi Women Allowed to Drive, NRI Drivers feel the Brunt

Saudi Arabia is speeding towards major changes. The Government has little choice because the oil brings in only 40% of what the country earned in 2013. There are those who predict that half of the foreign drivers (currently more than 1.3 million) will depart withing two years. But it may not may not be that quick. One reason is that the women can learn driving only from women instructors. Where is Saudi Arabia going to find that many women instructors? They may not like to hire the cheaper instructors from the Asian countries, because the quality of driving might also be not bery good. Hiring Western instructors may not be affordable. The quick grant of licenses may be possible only to those women who studied/lived abroad for some years. Their numbers may not cross 100,000. But other women might take a lot longer to get their licenses. So I think at leat 70% of the foreign drivers will still be there 3-4 years from now.

The film is showing the pain of Bald headed persons and total film is very nice. This type of film any body can see with family members no where sex exposure. Though film is silent without any fighting scene or unnecessary romance scene. Raj shetty is suitable for the role and his action is very natural. His film direction is good All female actress acted very nice. I think this is very low budget film but it is successful movie. I have enjoyed the language of mangalore since I had been Mangalore for more than 20 years Actually I could not see this movie in Film talkies but today I have seen this movie in T.V. Now I felt that I would have seen this movie in Film talkies Best of Luck to Raj shetty.

Where are the champions of Individual rights? Never mind – they are all hiding under desk. Is this not a violation of one’s right to gather and hold rally? Kerala is going to pay a heavy price for flirting with anti-democratic forces. These guys never protested or pelted stones when dozens of youth joined ISIS. There was no outrage when SIMI activists were involved in terrorist acts. Now they are threatening a political leader’s right to protest? This shows how dishonest and pathetic are the pseudo-secular groups and their minority ‘vote banks’. A sad day for democracy.

  • From Confused Desi on Former DySP Anupama Shenoy plans to form new political party

I wish Ms Shenoy well in her endeavours with politics. It appears to me that the lady has a very limited view of the politics and government in general. If the MLAs form groups and, on a whim, bring down an elected Government (which I guess includes those MLAs as well), the ordinary people lose big time. The ordinary people will have to keep electing new Governments perhaps every year – only for that Government to be pulled down by the MLAs. Eventually people will be so tired of voting, hardly anybody will bother going to vote. Elections cost a lot of money. The money has to come from the taxpayers. With the Governments changing far too often, the administration will be far weaker. Corruption can only increase, as there would be hardly any oversight on the functioning of the unelected public servants. A police-style running of the Government might end up being similar to the army-run Government in Pakistan. Cart before the horse, I guess. Simple-minded people come up with simple solutions to problems that have evaded answers since the dawn of civilisation.

  • From Richard Thomas on Pramod Madhwaraj Launches 'Mathru Purna' Scheme in Udupi District

There is absolutely no reason to be malnourished or undernourished in the Udupi District in general in India. Whole Milk – Green Label NANDINI Milk costs today Rs.40.- a litre, 1 Doz. Chicken Eggs costs Rs.48.- to Rs.50. per one Dozen, Fresh whole Chicken costs approx. Rs.140.-/1Kg, Skin-on, and barring the lean period of monsoon (3 months – June September) – All vegetables coming from North Karnataka costs around Rs.20.- to Rs.45.- per Kg. So in reality, the above-mentioned healthy and nutritious food is not expensive and affordable even to the common labourer earning Rs.500.- per day. What needs to be price controlled and tax controlled are items such as Rice, Fis, Fruits, Cooking Oil, Tea, Coffee, and various lentils, Fish although caught is tons every day in Malpe. is all exported to other places and states, and there is no control or governance to control their export nor their retail pricing or shortages – sadly those people in authority who inaugurate such issues do nothing to provide or control supply and retailing. Tender coconut that is good for women, in general, is selling for Rs.35,- per piece in Udupi that is locally sourced and whereas Rs.40.- in Mumbai that is imported from Kerala. Isn’t this a rip off despite Karnataka being a land of Rice, Coconut, and Fish. Fresh fruits like bananas, apples, sweet limes, etc., all locally grown, should also be price controlled. Those Bijapuris vendors in Udupi are minting money selling fruits at their own wish and fancy, and the people in authority including the District In-charge is doing nothing to check this menace, Women who look pathetically skinny and malnourished are not necessarily so due to lack of food and nutrition, there are other underlying issues too such as husband is the boss and dictator, a drunkard husband, abusive husband, husbands who gamble, and the list goes on – so there is no real love, care, or harmony and peace at home. The government should totally ban liquor in Karnataka, that is causing so much of misery to households and society in general – never mind the loss of good revenue to the State.

  • From Max and Jessie Rasquinha on Youth should take care of elders with respect -Pramod Madhwaraj

Each and every parent should receive best possible respect and support from their children, especially when they are getting old. But the times are going thru various challenges, and therefore many children find it difficult to help their parents. Family value systems are also changing, and therefore as much as possible, the parents have to safeguard their own interest during their retirement stage. When parents have sufficient wealth thru movable or immovable assets there is always an advantage to the parents to make sure that their assets are properly controlled thru written Wills or any other Agreements, and make sure that the parental retirement life is well maintained by the children for which there is always a reward attached thru proper Will or Agreement. Parents who do not have any financial strength will have to place their entire hope in their children. This is where the Government can intervene and make sure that the parental retirement benefits are well covered. Senior Citizen Homes or Assisted Living Homes are coming into reality these days in India but these are also becoming expensive and even difficult to get due to acute shortage. Many Nuns and Priests also have now established Senior Citizen Homes but they also find it difficult to maintain these Charitable places for the benefit of the elderly due to financial constraints or even due to lack of public help. When the life span is also expanding in India there will be many more Senior Citizens living longer than before. Where to find them a suitable place to live and survive is a concern the sprouts in everyone’s mind.

Thanks to low standard journalism, political leadership and pseudo-secularism in our country – We are acting and behaving more like one of those Islamic Societies and less like a true democracy. We have reached a point where everything offends someone and a police action is demanded. Very soon, we may reach a point where we will have to shut down entire internet in our country. Unfortunately this also shows a total failure of education system. I don’t think we understand the concept of free speech, individual rights and secular society. Every time we put religion ahead of reason, we take several steps backward. This is why much smaller countries with population of some of our cities have achieved much more than a country of 1 billion people. We are only interested in eating, mediocre entertainment and superstitions. Oh well….

  • From Richard Thomas on Ban on protests at Clock Tower, Jatka Stand issue dominates Udupi CMC meeting

It’s sad to see the people in authority and the representatives of various groups always at loggerheads with each other for issues that should not exist in the first place, i.e. stray dogs, rain damaged roads, atrocities towards Dalits, etc. Most of these and many other issues are highlighted at the Clock Tower – (there is no Clock on the Tower!). Yes, Protests and most recently erecting pandals, should not be allowed on such a busy junction facing the Udupi Service Bus Stand and the KSRTC Bus Stand. It’s a nuisance to the motorists and to the pedestrians, as well as to police and security personnel who have to be deployed. The general public in Udupi knows very well the outcome of any such protest – it’s all political and an eye-wash – BJP versus Congress! it certainly does not benefit anybody’s livelihood – cost of living does not get cheaper, taxes do not get lowered, amenities do not get better, the power outage does not cease, the strikes do not end, the garbage and filth all around does not cease, the open urination on roads and walls do not cease, and last by not least, the infrastructure does not get better. Every thing happens only in Bangalore! Besides, it’s only those jobless (bekaar) people who have the time to watch such protests showcased at the Clock Tower – and that too certainly does not get them a job or a livelihood!

Are they humans only for our hindu majority Hindu nation and not for muslims majority Pak, bangla, Soudhi, Iran, Qatar etc i.e. a total of 56 muslims majoirty islamic nations? If 56 islamic nations cant take these rogingyas why should one of the 2 hindu nations (India and Nepal) should take them? Moreover many claim that under Modi, nation has become intolerant, Cow vigilantes, economy is slowing down, minorities are living in fear, not in my name campaign, named as lynchistan so …why would somebody need this rohingyas in a intolerant country?

That is a good step in the right direction. Saudi Arabia is trying to open the nation for tourism. The strict theocracy of Saudi Arabia is not allowing the thousands of people working in Saudi Arabia to have their places of worship, even for the Abrahamic religion. That shortcoming of Saudi Arabia will have to be rectified at the earliest to show the world that Saudi Arabia is moving forward. Congratulations.

  • From Ceanlia Vermeulen on 2017 Toastmasters World Champion of Public Speaking, Manoj Vasudevan enthralls the crowd in Abu Dhabi

What an honour to have met the “World Champion of Public Speaking Manoj Vasudevan”. I was privileged to get a photo taken with him and to do the Thanks to the Champ and all the amazing people attending this exciting event. I’m a proud Toastmaster and meeting Manoj in the flesh was an amazing experience. Public speaking can be daunting for some. But like any skill, it can be perfected with time. Vasudevan says that as a messenger, you are performing a service for your audience rather than speaking for your own validation. When you have a presentation to give, don’t rush to craft it instead first, figure out the fundamentals of the presentation and your goal. Vasudevan says you must “emotionally connect with your listeners and present information in a way that resonates with their needs, goals and agendas.” This was a night to remember. Do you want to become a confident public speaker and strong leader? If so, Toastmasters is the place for you. You’ll find a supportive learn-by-doing environment that allows you to achieve your goals at your own pace. For more information, you’re welcomed to contact me at tmceanlia@gmail.com

It was nice to note that Abu Dhabi raised to the occasion of greeting and honoring Mr. Manoj Vasiudevan, the recently selected World Champion of Public Speaking at the International Convention that took place in Van Couver British Columbia in Canada. Manoj Vasudevan deserves all the support and encouragement so that he may utilize all his leadership abilities to the best possible advantage of all that is available for him in the world arena of Public Speaking. This is a prestigious selection thru which Mr. Vasudevan will be able to share all his leadership skills not only in India but also in many other countries that he is closely connected thru his profession as a Transformational Coach. In a country such as India, we have more followers than leaders, and we are therefore confident that Mr. Manoj Vasudevan thru his triumph in Canada will boost our Leadership enthusiasm in India and many other countries all over the world, particularly in the Middle East, where the Indians, both men and women, are shining in an outstanding proportion. • From Richard Thomas on Work Towards Achieving Goal of 'Clean India' by October 2, 2019: Venkaiah Naidu

Our leaders in authority are just dreaming and making tall claims. It would have been truly great if the authorities appointed in every state and township were made to do their jobs, and be supervised for hands-on productivity. Otherwise penalized and replaced. Our PM, Mr. Modi stated a few days ago that by 2018 all homes in villages in India will have electricity, without realizing that there are many conditions and costs involved for any individual home or family to obtain electricity to their home. Moreover, where there is electricity already, people are made to withstand erratic power cuts every day in the name of load shedding, constant breakdowns/repairs, and maintenance, etc. Udupi is one such example. Our Vice President, Mr. Naidu is claiming to make India a clean country, without realizing that in towns such as Udupi or Mangalore one cannot find a single garbage bin in public areas or on main roads and streets, that would encourage people to throw wrappers, beverage/water bottles, etc. When our Ex-President, Mr. Pranab Mukherji visited Udupi just two months ago, the Udupi Municipality gave a good eye wash by ensuring that every street and public place en route Sri Krishna Temple and Mr. B.R. Shetty’s state-of-the-art new hospital project, was swept clean and all garbage from roads collected and all shrubs trimmed, and even the incomplete Bi-Pass on NH66 at Karavali junction was tarred and made accessible to the main road leading to Manipal. All shops small and big were ordered shut for 2 days. Loads of money was spent on giving the Government Guest House, an instant face-lift, and get-up to impress the then President. The next day after the President’s visit, the bi-pass was shut to the public, and the same dirt, filth, and garbage are seen now. So why all this false show by the Karnataka government and Udupi Municipality. Why can’t all that is needed in India be regulated and be genuine!

Not a word from her sister who fought tooth and nail with the treating folks in India. Obviously the patient did not get the benefit of the UAE treatment (free) without signing contract under super-strict UAE laws, where the judgments are super-fast as well. What the public will never know is why she died within a week of celebrating her 37th birthday with her family. It is well-known that Egyptians celebrate birthdays with lots and lots of sugary/fatty food. Of course, there is no way to know how this particular birthday was celebrated. But major problems erupted in India when the sister of the patient fed the latter food through the mouth despite the strict warning against it by the Indian doctors.

The existing department ‘Women and child welfare only is concerned about women, as they do not have manpower and funds for others…so no unit of the office is deputed to look after the aged and suffering. All these high and mighty on the stage are only aiming to get awards and rewards and deprive the aged of the meager amount that is available. The elders helpline..1090, for example always complains that they do not receive the grants form govt. Yet they are always ‘rocking and rolling’ and well padded. there is no system of operations and all is piece meal and at the whims and fancies of the operators. the persons sitting there the whole day only look after extraneous and personal matters. No follow up, no survey of what are the needs….the atrocities going on in old age institutions and by those running them. it is all a hoodwinking and an operation that helps no one out side of those running them.

Special thanks to Mr. Roshan Rodrigues, Dr. Ravindranath Shanbuag and all those who helped. We all have failed her. This is really really sad. Where are the cowards in media? Why are you not asking the hard-hitting questions on the nexus between slavery, religious beliefs and lack of human rights? In fact, if anyone brings this up, the same spineless media and pseudo-secular groups will label you as ‘moral police’ or ‘hindutva’ element. My heart goes out for this poor woman. I can only imagine the trauma she experienced, trapped in a house of criminal-family where even kids as young as 5 yrs old were groomed to participate in physical violence and abuse. ( There is no BJP- CONG or Hindu- Muslim obessions to be invloved) This noble man is not rich in money, but has a rich heart. This noble man did it not for publicity, unlike most policticans do.Did not call for press meet to show off either! This is the slefless deed should have been elevated by all. • From Max and Jessie Rasquinha on Mangaloreans of Chicago Celebrate Monti Fest - 2017

So much to read in Newspapers, web sites and even thru Facebook about the celebration of the Feast of Nativity all over the world, including North America. So fascinating to read so much of cultural and traditional attachment thru the Annual “Monthi Fest” rituals added with liturgical services duly combined with old hymns, songs and customs. Celebrations of feasts such as these all over the world by the Konkany speaking community that connects us together from all over the world. Whether it is in Israel or India, or whether it is in the Arabian Gulf or America or Canada, opportunities such as “Monthi Fest” enables people to gather together and renew their traditional festivities year after year. What a lovely feeling to cherish that Mother Mary is venerated all over the world thru the network of a small community from Mangalore and bring back not only the old memories of the past life of Mangalore but also renew our friendship and acquaintance with a view to respect who we are and where we have come from, in order to make our presence felt wherever we are.

  • From Max and Jessie Rasquinha on With Theme 'Live In Your World, Play In Ours' Roshni Nilaya hosts 'Expressions '17' Fest

Roshni Nilaya always has something to display that is far from the “usual” from many other Educational Institutions in and around Mangalore. The Institution that is dedicated for various Social Work activities obviously provides additional incentives to prove to be the “best of the best” in so many activities that enables many other Institutions to be as creative as Roshni Nilaya. “Live in your World, play in ours” is a good theme perhaps that attracted many Schools in and around Mangalore to take part in the event on September 16, 2017 and display their best of talents, creative displays to share with each other and encourage each group to produce something “best” that they have and compete with each other. India is a “young” nation with millions of young men and women trying to rise to the occasion to being creative in their displays of unique talents. When many Institutions display their talents on the same stage and prove to be the best, the competition is becoming tough and the judges find it very difficult to select the “very best”. At the end of the day each and every team that participated in the competition have to accept the ultimate decision of the judges as a “VIRTUAL REALITY”. Best of luck to you, Roshni Nilaya, for all your creativity in encouraging the youth to participate in the competitions and bringing a quality performance on the stage with talents from different groups. Let the healthy competition continue to prevail, and let the quality of performance earn the best benefit at the end. Thank you for all your good work. Look forward to seeing you all soon.

It is surprising that despite of Udupi District people having appointed District In-Charge, Mr. Pramod Madhvaraj – no action on concretising the roads in Manipal for a permanent solution to pot holes and bad roads during monsoon is implemented. Every monsoon one has to experience the same state of bad roads in Manipal – full of large pot holes, that are so hazardous to drivers of 2-wheelers and 4-wheelers. The Traffic Dept, and the DC Office are all in the same vicinity, and the people in authority there, they too do nothing to highlight and alleviate the situation. It looks so weird for a few who are concerned to take steps to swim or roll on these bad roads just to draw the attention of those in authority! People should pool in donations and carry out the repairs of roads themselves instead of depending on people who are placed in authority.

After few days Telephone team will dig and municipal workers will re-fill without placing tiles; then comes – water department … IN 2016 Amboli got new foot paths, well laid. by 2016 mid rainy season – all footpaths were broken open. • From Original R.Pai on Police foil Protest against Kundapur PSI Nasir Hussain by Fringe Elements

This report is a good example of what’s wrong in today’s India. First of all, referring to HJV as a ‘fringe elements’ is very condescending. I don’t remember reading similar usage when it came to PFI. Same way, the report says Police denied permission to hold a protest. They should realize that denying permission to hold protests is undemocratic. They could have allowed the protest and held HJV responsible for any violence or damage. By banning, they have turned HJV into a victim. Finally, the report says that the ‘fringe elements’ thrashed students. If it is true, why did police not register a case against HJV members? Based on video clips online, it is quite clear that there was no physical assault. Does it mean that this report is not factual? If so, why did police let HJV activists go? I’m personally 100% against moral policing. I don’t care if two adults are going out for fun. I’m not here to justify HJV as I find many of their tactics repulsive. But, the media is supposed to be better than these guys. Unfortunately, it’s the media that has repeatedly failed to live up to its own code of conduct. Really unfortunate.

Mr Alfie, you have brought up a very serious matter which is life risk to innocent Public. I have brought this issue during road safety meetings and got zero result. Look at the 4 wheeler repair garage near Sandesha Institution near Nanthoor Circle. Cars are repaired on one lane of Highway. 12 wheeler Tankers and Container trucks speed through here and there is a chance that few lives will be lost soon. Then only DC and PC will wake up for show. I spoke to Corporator of this area and She did not gave a damn. I spoke to Traffic Officers and they said that they will look into it. I suspect that they are wearing dark glasses. Throughout the City there are many placeswhere they do repair of vehicles on road side. and no one cares. They only give lip service. They get their vehicles probably repaired for free. Thanks to you Alfie. Let us see how much effect ,your article will do the difference.

Mr Placid Saldanha must be knowing the facts. The problem with the Church management is just like our MCC and all Parish Council members along with the CLERGY behave like dictators who think that they are the most intelligent people on this earth. As to Parish Council rules, The priest has to call a PARISH ASSEMBLY to take the opinion of the parishioners during such situations what they never do – Same like Corporator avoiding the formation of WARD COMMITTEE’S. Such a disgrace!! When did the decisions of a few people echo the sentiments of an entire parish?! Need I add the parishioners who have been there for generations and not just a few years to make these enormous decisions based on their whims! Why does money give anyone the right to erase the history of OUR church?? When did the ‘tombs’ come in the way of anyone?? If funds are in plentiful, then why is it not spent on the original school? Or are we too tied up in our fame and recognition of ‘donations’ to have our names announced in front of an audience in church? We have ALL failed.. Failed to bring about a change… Failed to even notice the state of the playground or the classrooms of the school? Or is it because the children are poor that we conveniently disregard their needs?? Or of the needy of the parish? Where are the priorities?? And why is the cemetry in such a deplorable condition? Why are the funds not allocated towards such maintenance instead? Why bother spending when we can get it cleaned up by parishioners themselves right!? Instead lets blow it up on something completely unwarranted like ripping apart more than a perfectly adequate and significantly historical flooring than polish it up perhaps!! Shameful and distasteful decision-making by everyone involved!!

This is truly shameful. Like stated earlier a lot of money is taken to be buried there. I understand the monsoons are still on but timely Maintenace should not wait for the end of a season. And will the priest and clergy of Mangalore along with the parish councils stop spending money on useless projects to commemorate milestones of the church. Instead of that ghastly unwanted wall, the money could have been spent on the homeless and needy people of the parish, funding children’s higher education etc. Stop wasting money when there is so much poverty around. Keep the vicinity of the church, the cemetery clean and set a good example of leading by example. Please don’t rip out the flooring just because you have surplus funds. Congress party and clueless media supported the bad behavior for decades. Now, even Hindus and Christians have started the same bad behavior. The future of democracy in India looks very questionable. Good job Congress and clueless geniuses in media!! Look what you have created!!

  • From Original R.Pai on Manipal Police nab 6 students for Consuming Drugs

Are these students not adults? If so, any adult should be able to do whatever he wants in his privacy as long as it doesn’t infringe others rights and cause any property damage. I wish our police could focus more on real culprits like MLAs/MPs and other public officials who steal tax resources to the tune of millions. They are damaging our society much more than a few adults getting high on drugs at their privacy.

  • From Original R.Pai on 'I am Gauri' NWF Stages Protest Demanding Arrest of Gauri Lankesh Killers

The hypocrisy of this group pretending to be champions of ‘progressive’ thinking while covering face according strict code of sharia is quite rich! What is progressive about hiding your identity? Oh well, people are not fools – we see the politics behind all these ‘protests’.

  • From Leena Fernandes on Renovating Our Churches? Quite the Reverse!

I totally agree with Dr. Lobo… the flooring of the Bejai church was changed not very long ago and now again they want to renovate it… see the state of this church’s cemetery… there is no walkway, grass and weeds do not allow a person to step in.. why can’t they spend at least some of the funds to renovate and maintain the cemetery? Instead, they ask the parishioners to clean up the cemetery during All Souls Day…

  • From GORDOST on Derogatory Comments on Jesus Christ, Accused Akshar Boliyamajal Arrested

Dear Mr. Alphonso, No one can deny the fact that there were many charitable institutions and are woRking now also in Mangalore and other parts of India. Before Independence -they used to get lot of benifits from the then Government. However they used to give priority to their own community either for treatment or education. Also there are few Medical institutions in Karnataka in whcih Bible is a subject in entrance exam and unless you pass in it you will not get a seat– Secular indeed!!

  • From Victor Tauro on Renovating Our Churches? Quite the Reverse!

A Poor thinks of Poor but not a poor thinker can think of poor. Even in 21st century Mangalore Catholic community has not moved from real estate development to Human welfare and development.

  • From Confused Desi on If Depressed Don't Commit Suicide, Instead Call Suicide LifeLine

Good article by the author. I appreciate the efforts of anyone that tries to help a depressed person. My onservation has been that a depressed person does not see any merit in any positive thoughts. What perhaps is needed is for the parents to have sufficient education to know how to recognise any signs of depression in their children. But parents can be busy, or in some cases, even alcoholic.

  • From mangalorean on How Can they RIP in Such a Mess? Bejai Church Cemetery in Pathetic Condition

Probably church has no funds for cemetery maintenance. Hope this article will not pour more from donors. People need to donate for causes directly than to the religious institutions of any religion where there is no accountability. Fearful devotees just do not open their mouth against the wrong doings of the religious organisations instead turn against the person who fights for justice. Appreciate the comments who supported the article.

  • From Sylvester Monteiro on How Can they RIP in Such a Mess? Bejai Church Cemetery in Pathetic Condition

The cemetery of St Francis Xavier church-Bijai is not just PATHETIC but DISASTROUS? I don’t belong to Bijai parish but have attended a few funerals, and I have seen the condition which is unimaginable. I would think to myself-“Is there anyone at the Bijai parish raising a voice against this issue?”
